What to Look For in a Cosmetic Dentist?
by Kevin Smith AuthorFinding a qualified, competent dentist to
do cosmetic dentistry can be a challenge because cosmetic dentistry is not
recognized as a formal specialty in most cases. In fact, the American Dental
Association (ADA) does not recognize it as a specialty, which automatically
means finding a qualified cosmetic dentistry specialist can be very
time-consuming. If you are looking for a specialist in advanced cosmetic
dentistry in Houston, TX, here is what to look for and insist upon before
making any decisions.
Training
General dentistry requires a lot of
training and specialized skills and there is a lot of overlap with cosmetic
dentistry, but a cosmetic dentist has additional training that sets them apart.
Specifically, they are trained to perform the duties of a prosthodontist, which
specialize in reconstructive dentistry. A general dentist can specialize in reconstructive
or cosmetic dentistry, but they have to have at least 2 years of ADA
esthetically oriented accredited programs and training. Some dentists lack the
formal training but will perform certain cosmetic procedures. Ensuring your
dentist is a trained prosthodontist is a must first step for all but the most
basic cosmetic procedures (teeth whitening).
Insurance
Because cosmetic dentistry is not a
recognized specialty, inquiring about what your insurance company will cover is
a wise idea. There may be ways of getting your procedure covered or
alternatives you could consider that would be covered. Asking your insurance
customer service representative what your insurer will cover is one way of
ensuring you do not have to foot the entire bill for the procedure you want.
Check Before and After References
Dr. Nick of The Simpsons is a quack surgeon
who shows up every time Homer or Bart need some “emergency surgery.” While he
will promise they will come out ok, he will never ensure that they will be
healed or introduce them to some other patient references. That should be a red
flag to the Simpsons and it should be to you if your cosmetic dentist does not
willingly point you to some people who sing their praises. Also, you should
check to see if any complaints have been filed against your cosmetic dentist
and what those complaints are.
Finding a competent cosmetic dentist can be
a chore and a process. Part of that is also figuring out what your insurance
will cover. Follow these three guidelines to help you navigate your way to find
advanced cosmetic dentistry in Houston, TX.
