What makes ikkat dying pattern so unique?

by Aarushi Reddy studant

Ikkat is the name of a dying technique which is used to pattern textiles that employ resist dying on the yarns before dying and weaving the fabric. This process is done with silk or cotton, and the result is a piece of cloth filled with exquisite colour patterns.

The technique which is known with the name of ikkat, it had its origin in different parts of the world. From South East Asia, Central Asia, South America and West Africa, ikkat is one of the ancient forms of dying fabrics. The word ‘ikkat’ is derived from Malay word mengikat which translates to tie or to bind. The Orissa ikat dates to the 12th century when artists from the patan region of modern-day Gujarat migrated to Orissa and bought their craft to this region.

The ikkat sarees wholesale are manufactured in three varieties-

•Single ikkat is the process in which either warp yarn or the weft is dyed.

•The second procedure involves both warp yarns and the weft being used together in different parts of the fabric.

•Double ikkat is a procedure that consists of both warp and weft threads tied in a considerably

precise manner so that when the threads from the axis mesh with each other at specific points, it shows a completed pattern.

In the making of this fabric, a unique process called resist dying is used. The core materials which are used in Orissa ikat are cotton and silk. The tools used for carrying out this process are scissor, dye vats, rubber bands and other tying material which resist dye.

In Indian sub-continent, pattu silk sarees are quite famous. Silk is known by the name of pattu in this part of India. Kanchi Pattu sarees which are manufactured in Kanchipuram region of Tamil Nadu is the most sought-after style of saree.
