by Aarushi Reddy studant

A saree is a female garment from the Indian subcontinent which consists of a drape varying around five to nine yards. Although there are numerous styles for weaving and draping saree, the nivi style is the most popular. Over the years, saree has gone drastic changes in methods of manufacturing.

There are five significant styles how the production of saree gets done-

•Northern styles

•Eastern styles

•Western styles

•Southern styles

•Central styles

Ikkat pattu sarees which are from the Eastern styles belong to Bargarh in Odisha. They get their name from the ikkat dying technique which is used to pattern textiles that employ resist dyeing on the yarns before dying and weaving the fabric. A unique feature of these sarees is the blurriness of the textile.

It is manufactured using the following techniques-

•Warp ikkat- This technique dyes only the warp yarns, and it is done using the ikat techniques.

•Weft ikkat- This technique uses the weft yarn to carry the dyed pattern. In this technique, the pattern only appears as the weaving proceeds.

•Double ikkat- This technique involves both the warp and the weft resist dyed before weaving.

•Pasapalli ikkat

Using the double ikkat technique, patola sarees from silk are woven. They are among the most expensive sarees and are mostly worn by Royal families and nobles.

Sarees manufactures in the Telangana region of Andhra Pradesh are also quite famous, and they are known by the name of Gadwal sarees. The distinctive features of these sarees are the Zari which is done on them. These sarees consist of a cotton body with the silk pallu, and the weight is quite light of these sarees.
