What It Means to Worship Lord Ganesha and his Single Tusk
by Vivek Choudhary Nice lifeLord Ganesha is the remover of all obstacles. He is
intelligent, wise, empathetic, and kind. He is also strong, powerful, and
mighty. These are some of the characteristics used to describe Lord Ganesha.
When you carefully observe a Brass Ganesh
Murti, you can see there are a few noticeable characteristics about the
idol. Lord Ganesha an elephant's head and only has one tusk. There are several
stories about how exactly he lost it. Let’s find out why Ganesha lost a tooth
and is still revered as the greatest lord.
According to one of the stories, Lord Parshurama, the sixth
avatar of Vishnu, had combatted his enemy Kartavirya Arjuna and some kings.
After his win, Lord Parshurama went to thank Lord Shiva for his blessings. Lord
Ganesha was guarding his parents as they were asleep, and wouldn’t let
Parshurama enter. This made Parshurama very angry and started fighting with
Ganesha. Lord Ganesh was powerful, and when it appeared that he would win, Parshurama
threw his axe at him. Ganesha refused to fight back because the axe belonged to
his father, Shiva. He received the axe on his left tusk and broke it off.
In another story in the Mahabharata, Lord Ganesha broke off
his tusk so that he could write Mahabharata as Ved Vyasa was dictating to him.
Ved Vyasa wanted to write Mahabharata, but he could use help; hence he asked
Lord Ganesha. They had a condition to not stop in between the writings; thus,
when Lord Ganesha’s pen started withering, he broke off his tusk to write the
ending of Mahabharata. This story is how he earned the title of ‘Ekdanta.’ Ever
since all the idols that are made or even the Brass Ganesha
Idols for Home have a single tusk.
Lord Ganesha has several facets to him about symbolism. His
large head is a representation of intelligence and wisdom. The small eyes are
representative of concentration and focus, the determination it requires to get
through life. His large ears represent the need to listen to people intently
and pay attention.
