What Do You Understand by Geotextile?

It is made up of porous fabrics that can protect, reinforce, drain, filter, and separate the soil. These are mainly manufactured of polyester and polypropylene and divided into three forms – Needle-Punched, Heat Bonded, and Woven.

What are The Types of Fabrics That Are Used in Geotextile Manufacturing?

Geotextiles are usually made up of polyester or polypropylene. The fibres used in the manufacturing of Geotextile are made of Natural or Synthetic Fibres. The types of natural fibres are paper strips, jute nuts, wool mulch, or wood shavings. In various soil projects, geotextiles provide a firm grip to the surface that are long-last for many years. As usual bio-degradable natural fabrics naturally have a short life span and expire in a few years. They are used in preventing soil erosion until the vegetation comes up in the soil.

Types of Natural Fibres

·        Jute -  It is a versatile vegetable fibre that is highly biodegradable and generates nutrients to grow the vegetation quickly. It can perfectly mix with the soil and hold down till its base. Quick biodegradation is a weaker part of Geotextile. So, various treatments and blending are used to provide an increment to Geotextile up to 20 years. Types of Synthetic Fibres

Polypropylene is one of the oldest synthetic fibre that was discovered in 1931. Many non-woven fibres are made of one of the processes called Needle-Punching. These are given below.

·        Polyamide – Polyamide is of two types – Nylon 6 and Nylon 6.6 and is rarely used as Geotextile. The first category is made with a mixture of the petroleum extent called caprolactam. The second category is manufactured with a salt of adipic acid and hexamethylene diamine. Both types are extracted into small granules and manufactured in thread-like forms. These are stronger than polyester and polypropylene and are susceptible to hydrolysis.

·        Polyesters – These are made ethylene glycol with terephthalic acid or dimethyl terephthalate acid. It has more strength structure, skulk resistance and general chemical inertness and making it perfect as Geotextiles. Solvents such as phenol and meta cresol with a pH range between 7-10 are used in Geotextiles and making it long-lasting up to 50 years. It is highly resistive to UV radiations. Its installation requires extra attention and prevent from the exposure to UV radiations.

·        Polyethylene – It is manufactured in crystalline form that is an essential ingredient to the fibre-forming polymer. These are available in three types that are low density, low linear density, and very high density.

·        Polypropylene – It is a crystalline thermoplastic material made of the polymerization of propylene monomers with catalyst Zeigler-Natta.

What Do You Know About Woven and Non-Woven Geotextiles?

Woven Geotextiles are made by twisting and blending textiles on a loom created into single length. The end product is sturdy and robust that is used in car parking and road constructions. These are well-equipped to manage any ground stabilization problems.

It is less porous and ensures no separation against fine particles. It is a durable synthetic fibre and also resisting any UV degradation. It is enabling the water to seep through it and filter the sediments that can block the rest of the drainage system. It is used in construction that protects it from soil erosion by separating the materials below of geotextiles from the upper part. Woven textiles are used to accomplish six primary functions, such as protection, filtration, draining, separation, reinforcing, waterproofing. Woven geotextiles are made of typically incorporate or yarn-blend. Woven geotextiles also including plastic materials. These are made of light-weight that is usually used in the construction of the project.

Non-Woven Geotextiles are manufactured by including fibres by the process of needle-punching or other suitable methods.

Thermal Treatment is used to improve the tensile strength of geotextiles. Needle-Punched Non-Woven fabrics are constructed by using tiny textiles and using a barbed needle to weave the materials together. Because of Permeability feature, it is used in protection, separation, draining and filtration. It breaks down quickly that Woven Geotextiles. For construction projects where water pooling is the main issue, and it is used to drain it.

It is not easy to differentiate Woven and Non-Woven Geotextiles, but Woven is made with Higher Strength, whereas Non-Woven has a high flow rate. You can determine both fabrics by their elongation and weights. Woven Geotextiles are rarely identified by weight, while Non-Woven is identified by their consequences like 4oz, 6oz, 10oz. Higher the weight is considered as Heavy Duty Fabrics.

What are the Uses of Geotextiles?

Construction of roads, harbour works, hillside projects to control erosion, etc. are increasing the use of Geotextiles.

Some of the common uses of Geotextiles are given below.

·        Separation – Geotextiles is used between two layers of different materials like between two soils, new projects, steep slopes, etc. It is used to manage stabilization with slight distinctions.

·        Stabilization – Fabric is applied to the top of highly compressed materials. These allow water to seep through it from soft soil. It used to form a strong base.

·        Reinforcement – Geotextiles are often used to provide more stabilization than strength. It is used as reinforcement material in steep slopes that save land surface, control water in bay shores and sea embankments, Retaining walls with the different settlement.

·        Filtration – Geotextiles provide water filtration from the upper layer without allowing any other material to pass through it. Its primary use to allow water from covered layer to drain. It is achieved in combination with filter available behind geotextile material.

·        Moisture Barrier – It is opposite to the Filtration. It is used to block water than allowing to pass through it. It is possible by applying asphaltic suspension.

·        Drainage – Geotextile gathers water from different sources and transmit it along its plane and hence, providing proper transmission or drainage. It is highly effective in Chimneys Drains and Drip Drains.
