What is the best medicine to reduce creatinine?

by Rahul Kumar Health and Medical

What is creatinine? What happens when it increases?

Creatinine is a byproduct of normal muscle function. When creatinine levels in the body increases, it suggests that a person has a greater amount of muscle mass in their body. This is also why males have higher creatinine levels in comparison to females.

Kidneys are responsible for the removal of excess creatinine present in the blood through urine. Healthy kidneys have the capacity to filter creatinine out of the blood and dispose it through the urine.

Increased levels of creatinine may not be harmful alone, but it does suggest other medical conditions like- chronic kidney disease. Doctors can understand the condition of a person's kidneys by conducting a serum creatinine blood test along with other factors like the patient’s age, weight and their medical history.

Normal and high levels of creatinine

Normal creatinine levels are believed to vary among different hospitals and  labs. However, The common reference range for creatinine is -

     0.7-1.2 mg/dl for males

     0.5-1.0 mg/dl for females

If the creatinine levels exceed the levels mentioned above, they may be considered to be high. The doctor will however draw a conclusion after considering other factors such as the patient’s age, sex and the hydration levels in their body.

What causes creatinine to be high?

Increased levels of creatinine are an early indication of issues with the kidney. This is mainly because of-

Kidney stones blocking the urinary tract

     A kidney infection

     Glomerulonephritis

     Kidney failure

Lifting heavy weights and excessive exercising can stimulate the creatinine levels in the body. Certain steroids and oral medicines can temporarily increase muscle size but affect the kidneys severely.

A person undergoing a creatinine test is advised to convey to the doctor if they are on an excessive protein diet or on a previous medication which is related to the kidneys.

Some other health conditions that also can damage the kidneys and lead to increased creatinine levels in the body are-

     Heart disease

     High blood pressure

     Diabetes

What are the symptoms of high creatinine?

High creatinine levels can have different symptoms in people, depending on the cause.

1.   Drug toxicity: There are some antibiotics, drugs and medications that may harm the kidneys and prevent them from functioning properly. The symptoms of drug toxicity are-

     Nausea and vomiting

     High fever

     Back and side pain

     Foul smelling or foamy urine

2.   Glomerulonephritis: This condition is caused by lupus and other such infections. It can cause damage to the kidneys and increase the risk of an untimely kidney failure. Symptoms of Glomerulonephritis are-

Blood or protein in the urine

Swelling in face and around ankles

     High blood pressure

3.   Diabetes: People suffering from diabetes may experience high blood sugar levels, which increases the risk of health problems including kidney disease. The symptoms of type 1 diabetes show up almost immediately whereas symptoms developed in type 2 diabetes happen with time. The symptoms of type 1 and type 2 diabetes are -

     Increased thirst and appetite

     Fatigue

     Numb hands and feet

     Blurry vision

4.   High blood pressure: If the force of blood against the walls of the arteries is too high, it indicates the condition of high blood pressure. It can injure the blood vessels that surround the kidneys and disrupt its normal functioning. People with high blood pressure usually do not develop any major symptoms.

5.   Heart disease: Congestive heart disease and other such conditions can affect the kidney’s normal functioning. People with heart disease may have the following symptoms -

     Shortness of breath

     Regular chest pain

     Irregular heart beat

     Fatigue and weakness

6.   Urinary tract blockage: It occurs when the urinary tract gets blocked by factors like tumors, kidney stones, or an enlarged prostate. Such a condition may cause the urine to be accumulated in the kidneys and affect their functioning. This can eventually lead to hydronephrosis. The following signs indicate a urinary tract blockage-

     Blood in the urine

     Back or side pain

     Painful urination

     High fever

7.   Kidney failure: When the kidneys can no longer function on their own, it suggests a condition of kidney failure. Kidney failure can be acute or chronic depending on the symptoms and time taken for them to show up.

The symptoms in acute kidney failure are-

     Confusion

     Irregular heartbeat

     Nausea and vomiting

     Weakness

     Irregularities in urine

The symptoms of chronic kidney failure are-

     Difficulty in sleeping

     Muscle cramps

     Constant itching

     Lack of appetite
