What is Surrogacy? and what are its different types?
by Samit Sekhar Co-owner @ Gurgaon Fertility CentreIt is an arrangement
endorsed by a legal agreement wherein a woman agrees to get pregnant and give
birth to a baby for another couple that fails to reproduce for some reason or
the other. A woman is known as a surrogate mother and the couples seeking a
child are known as Intended parents.
People seek this sort of
arrangement only when pregnancy is not possible. When pregnancy risks are too
dangerous for the intended parents or when a single man or a male couple wishes
to have a child, surrogacy can be opted for. It is considered to be one of the
Assisted Reproductive Technologies or ART. As surrogacy cost in India is
comparatively lower, infertile couples from all around the world look for a
good surrogacy
clinic in Gurgaon, India.
In this sort of
arrangement, both the parties (surrogate mother and the intended parents) are
legally bounded. Monetary compensation may or may not be involved. In some
countries, commercial surrogacy is banned. However, the surrogate mother can
claim for the expenses incurred during the process. The legality and the cost
of surrogacy vary greatly between the jurisdictions which sometimes result in a
problematic interstate or international surrogacy arrangement.
Before going in for this
arrangement both the surrogate mother as well as intended parents have to be
well-aware of the legalities. Surrogacy is legal in India and wherever the
process is legal the third-party agency can assist in the couples as well as
the mother to find a surrogate and arrange a surrogacy contract. These agencies
take a thorough screen test of the surrogate mother before supplying her to the
parents. Medical and psychological tests are done to make sure that the mother
is healthy and can have a healthy gestation. These agencies are very helpful as
they also facilitate the legal matters concerning surrogate and intended
parents.
Two Approaches for Surrogacy:
Before looking out for the
best surrogacy treatment center in India or elsewhere, you should know that
there are two approaches to surrogacy one is gestational surrogacy and another one
is traditional. These two types of surrogacy are differentiated by their
genetic origin of sperms and eggs. In the US gestational is more popular and
the traditional is considered as an intricate process.
Traditional Surrogacy:
This type of surrogacy is
also known as natural, partial and straight surrogacy. In this surrogacy egg of
the surrogate mother is fused with the sperm of the commissioning father who is
also known as donor. Insemination of the surrogate
mother, in this case, takes place through artificial or natural
insemination.
Gestational Surrogacy:
Also known as host or full surrogacy, this type of surrogacy was achieved in the year April 1986 and it took place when an embryo is created by IVF or in-vitro fertilization technology and was implanted to the women surrogate. It is sometimes referred to as a gestational carrier also. It has many forms and in each form, the resulting child is not related to the surrogate mother.
