What is environmental studies and its Job Opportunities

by Mayank Kumar Counsellor

Environmental Studies is designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of environmental issues. It focuses on studying different environmental aspects such as climate change and global warming, contamination and pollution, food and energy needs, and the relationship between man and the environment.

BA (Hons) or BA Environmental Studies is an innovative course to prepare students for the biggest challenge of the 21st century. The BA courses introduce learners to basic concepts in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Ecology, Earth Sciences and Environmental Studies. In addition, the course includes thematic studies and are designed to equip students with skills in research methods.

Job Opportunities

Environmental is that branch of study where you can find many ways to protect our environment with reliable resources.

Environmental Scientists

Environmental scientists use their knowledge or skills to protect the environment and human health. They work in offices and laboratories. Some may spend time in the area gathering data and monitoring environmental conditions firsthand. Some of the things environmental scientists do are:

Ø  Determine data collection methods for surveys, research projects, and investigations

Ø  Collect environmental data from samples of soil, water, air, food, and different materials for scientific analysis

Ø  Analyse samples, surveys, and different information to identify threats to the environment

Ø  Develop plans to control, prevent, or fix environmental issues, like land or water pollution

Ø  Provide information to government officials, businesses, and the general public

Ø  Prepare technical presentations that explain their research and findings

Environmental Manager

An environmental manager is a professional who uses their knowledge of environmental policies, safety guidelines and occupational health. They also focus on applying scientific efforts to conserve land's overall qualities, including forests, parks, mountain ranges and different locations of natural splendour.

Environmental consultants may perform various tasks to ensure businesses maintain sustainable practices. Below are some of their everyday responsibilities:

Ø  Meet their customers and determine their needs

Ø  Oversee all-day activities of team members to maintain the environment system

Ø  Perform environmental regulation audits to monitor contamination, emissions and damages

Ø  Educate industrial workers on policies and programs

Ø  Generate environmental reports as per state regulations

Ø  Work with team members to create effective ecological strategies to minimise contamination

Ø  Investigate environmental topics and develop effective action plans

Ø  Propose new strategies to improve the existing ecological plans

Ø  Develop waste recycling procedures and oversee environmental pollution procedures

Ø  Enforce developed policies

Ø  Get up-to-date environmental legislation and trends

Environment Journalists

A journalist plays a vital role in the development of the nation. A journalist usually gathers information about the things happening in the country, such as news and research about animals and wildlife, conservation, and environmental issues like pollution, climate change, genetic manipulation, factory farming or canned trophy hunting.

Some journalists create environmental news articles for blogs, print magazines, and online magazines. In addition, some journalists write about environment-related industry news and trends for trade magazines read by workers in energy, design, and related industries.

Environment Photography

Environment photography attempts to capture nature in all its beauty and grandeur. Photography can document the changing of the seasons. It can also demonstrate natures resilience in urban environments like Los Angeles or New York.

Professional environmental photographers use digital cameras and specialised lenses to capture nature images. For example, some ecological photojournalists specialise in animal portraits of a golden eagle or Tibetan fox, whereas others only shoot underwater or specialise in landscape photography. People in the photography business often have their work featured in outdoor and travel publications, and some sell their work to archival services offered by stock agencies or image aggregators.

Program Aims

The BA program will:

Ø  provide students with a conceptual understanding of natural, physical and biological processes and cycles of the earth

Ø  equip learners with interdisciplinary tools and skills of analysis and evaluation through field studies in biodiversity and geology

Ø  cultivate in learners a scientific as well as a socio-economic understanding of global and regional environmental issues

Ø  develop in learners an understanding of the between humans and nature using relevant theoretical frameworks to explore fundamental issues such as water security, food security, agro-ecosystems, etc.

Ø  enable learners to undertake qualitative and quantitative research studies and to prepare them to collect, synthesise and analyse varied types of data

Summary

The environmental studies combines methods of physical sciences, natural sciences and social sciences. It equips learners to develop a critical understanding of the environment and significant environmental issues through the study. The courses include laboratory experience, fieldwork experience, and social science-based project experience.

This environmental course provides you with the opportunity to influence the world's future by finding solutions to present issues. For those who are very passionate about nature and its bio-diversity for them, this is a fantastic course.
