What is detergent powder?

For the uninitiated ones, the word detergent is borrowed from a Latin word “detergere”, which means “away from”, and tergere means “to wipe”. Ever since 17th century, the word has been used as an adjective in English. Detergent is classified into three main categories, which depends on the electrical charge of the surfactants. The three categories are Anionic detergents, cationic detergents and non-ionic and zwitter ionic detergents.

Now coming to what a detergent is, well, a detergent is a mixture of surfactants that are gifted with cleansing properties in dilute solutions. The substances of detergent powder are basically alkylbenzenesulfonates, which is a family of compounds, which are similar to that of a soap, but are comparatively more soluble in water. It is because of the fact that detergents have polar sulfonate, which is less like to bind to calcium and other ions found in hard water.

It is also to be mentioned here that detergent in domestic context is known as laundry detergent or dish detergent. Also, detergents are majorly available in the market as powders or concentrated solutions. They are partially hydrophilic (polar) and partly hydrophobic (non-polar). It is because of this property of detergents that they act amazing on compounds such as oil or grease. And since air is not hydrophilic, so the detergents are also foaming agents that differs many degrees.

Uses Of Detergent Powder

•    To whiten pillows
Detergents are majorly used in order to whiten the pillows which might turn off-white after some time. All you have to do is just mix the detergent powder or liquid detergent with a cup of water and mix well. Add a cup off bleach and half a cup of borax in order to get the desired white pillows.

•    To clean oil spills
Detergents also work amazingly in order to clean any oil spills on a certain fabric. There are undoubtedly a few products available in the market that are made for this particular purpose, nonetheless, cleaning with detergent will be an inexpensive way. Just put a little bit of water on the cleaning area along with detergent powder and leave it overnight. The oil spill will be gone the next day when you will wash it off.

•    To degrease stove
There is no denying the fact that gas stove has grease, so detergent powders are again very useful when it comes to get rid of that. To degrease you gas stove, all you have to do is spray bottle, mix the liquid detergent with bleach and water, and there you go!

•    To eradicate weeds and moss
Detergent powder is also used to eradicate weeds and moss just like what vinegar is supposed to do. All you have to do is just sprinkle a few cups of detergent powder in your balcony and more specifically on the moss and weeds. After a few days, it will get dry and you can rinse it off!
