Many developers go with In-App Purchases to monetize the app.  It can be an ideal route too.  This option is recommended for games and entertainment apps.  Depending on the type, In-App Purchases are only possible if an app succeeds to create a curiosity/excitement in the minds of users to run it more.  If the app creates a strong need of additional paid features, users can buy those features through In-app Purchases.  There are many apps which are deriving revenue from In-App Purchases.

Geo-location’s answer
Geo location can also be an answer for monetization through in-app advertisings.  If the mobile can reveal that where people are, and what they are doing, the mobile app networks can send relevant ads on the device.  But this option can also pose a risk, because ad networks will also be able to figure-out various types of personal information of users.
