Winter-Proofing Your Car - Tips for a Smooth Winter Drive

by Justin Langer Content Manager

When the going gets tough, planning ahead of time is essential for survival. If you live in a location with lengthy winters, you'll understand what I'm talking about. Let's face it: winters are hard and brutal not just for humans, but also for our automobiles. If we do not prepare ourselves and our cars for winter conditions, the harsh weather will undoubtedly overwhelm us.

In terms of performance, our vehicles function best under regular temperature and pressure circumstances. Because winters are often harsh, it is critical that you prepare your car to manage such circumstances, or you risk causing damage to the vehicle as well as endangering your personal safety on the road.

You do not need to cover your vehicle with a blanket in the winter. You must take care of a few basic things to ensure that your vehicle is in top condition to deal with unfavorable situations such as chilly temperatures, slick roads, snow, rain, and other uncertainties.

Before winter arrives, make sure your car is thoroughly repaired by a certified mechanic or follow these procedures to enhance its immunity.

Engine oil replacement:

Before winter arrives, make sure you have changed the Engine Oil / Motor Oil in your car. Typically, engine oil should be changed every 3000 to 5000 miles. To determine whether your car requires an engine oil change, consult your vehicle's maintenance journal. If you haven't changed your engine oil in the last six months, you should do it right away to avoid engine damage throughout the winter.

Changing the coolant:

The level of antifreeze or coolant in your car should also be checked. The coolant reservoir should be full, and the radiator should be completely filled. Typically, 50% water is mixed in with the antifreeze, but it is best to fill your car with solely antifreeze before winter because water can freeze in severe conditions. Because antifreeze keeps the engine cool, its absence due to freezing or a drop in level might result in an overheated engine.

Tire replacement (if required):

It is critical that your vehicle's tires are adequate for winter driving (all weather tires) and have a tread depth of roughly 4/32 of an inch to handle the cold, wet, and typically slippery roads in winter. You may either have a mechanic measure the depth of your tire treads or purchase a tread measurement gadget and do it yourself. These gadgets may be found at local auto parts stores. You may also see whether your tires need to be replaced by looking at the "wear bars" on them. These are rubber markings seen within the treads of tires all around the circle. If the treads have worn down to the level of these wear bars, the tires must be changed. Also, keep tire pressure at prescribed levels and check it every two weeks during the winter. In cold temperatures, tires lose pressure fast. You should also maintain a suitable spare tire in your car in case of an emergency.

Wipers for the windshield:

You may need to replace your windshield wipers every year, and it is usually a good idea to do so before winter arrives. Some wipers can even last longer, and it is up to you to determine whether or not the wipers in your automobile are working properly. A windshield wiper will undoubtedly be a buddy and a helpful hand while driving on a rainy or snowy day.

Lights:

Each light in your car is critical in all weather, but more so in the winter. Lights serve not only for your visibility but also for the visibility of other cars and pedestrians on the road in low-light conditions such as rain, snow, and fog. Each light has a specific purpose, and their significance is amplified during the gloomy and cloudy winters.

Battery:

Check that your automobile battery has at least 12 volts of charge. Connecting a standard voltmeter to the battery will allow you to check this. If this is not the case, you should visit a battery technician. A depleted battery might leave you stranded in the middle of nowhere, which is dangerous in any weather, let alone in winter.
