What are the early signs of hearing loss?

by Dynamix Group Writer

As one gets older, there are certain body changes that take place due to biological degradation. While some may have definite reasons, some are just the result of old age. Hearing loss or changes in hearing is a common occurrence in the elderly. It is not something that develops overnight; rather just as your hair turns grey over a period of time, age related hearing issues are just as subtle.

However, it is important to pay attention to the early signs. Taking them lightly or ignoring them can fasten the process and lead to complete loss of hearing. People with untreated loss of hearing tend to be depressed, isolated, or face memory problems. If you experience any of the following signs or symptoms, you should immediately visit your doctor for a check-up. Most of the doctors use a Heine otoscope to test your ears and come to a conclusion. Let’s take a look at the early signs of hearing loss.

Your ears feel clogged. This generally happens when you have too much wax or fluid in your ears. However, if your ears are clear, it is best to get a hearing test done. The beginning of hearing loss can make sounds dull or muffled, hence giving the same sensation as that of clogging.

You can't follow the conversation in noisy places. When you have a difficulty in hearing people around you, due to background noise, you must get your ears checked. The background sounds at malls and restaurants are low pitched while letters in speech, such as ‘s’ and ‘f’ are high pitched. Despite this difference if you are unable to ignore the background noise, it means that there is some problem in your hearing ability.

Children's voices sound muffled or unclear. Aging takes a toll on your cochlea, an organ in your inner ear that helps you hear. With time the cells that detect high pitched sounds are the first ones to start faltering. This defect makes it difficult to understand individuals who have a high pitched voice, mostly kids and women. You may also notice a lack of hearing of microwave beeps or crickets chirping at sunset.

You're exhausted after social events. When you are unable to hear all the sounds in speech, your brain has to work extra hard to fill in the gaps of the conversation to make sense of what the other person is saying. This requires a lot of focus, especially in situations where you have more than one person speaking. These added efforts may leave you extremely tired at social events. If this situations sounds familiar to you, or is something you experience on a regular basis, you should visit your audiologist or consult your doctor at the earliest.

In most of these cases, doctors would suggest the use of hearing aids to help with your hearing problems. You can acquire hearing aids, hearing aid batteries or other medical requirements from Smart Medical Buyer. It is one of India’s leading online hospital equipment suppliers.
