Welding helmet – Its different types, components and importance

by Longevity Inc Industrial Mechanical
Welding may seem like a simple and easy task that is used to join the metals together but it is not the case. It is a very risky procedure altogether that involves working on extremely high temperatures. It is necessary to follow all the precautionary measures for a safe welding. Safety and protection are keys to carrying out any job that has safety hazards.

There are various types of welding methods and all them have safety hazards associated with them. It is imperative to use heavy gloves, protective long sleeve jacket and a welding helmet during a welding process.

Types of welding helmets

There are basically two types of welding helmet available in the market. You can choose the one that suits you based on the comfort and preference. Both of them are good for all welding situations.

Auto darkening

This helmet is easier to use as it does not require the welder to arrange it whenever they hit the arc or for checking the weld. Even if the welder is working in a congested area, there is no need to worry while working too closely with the work piece. The welder will still have protection and can view the work piece very clearly. Sensors present in this helmet instantly detect the lit arc and automatically change the lens shade as needed. These helmets can be powered both by solar and battery.

Regular lens

This type of helmet comes with IR and UV protection coated glass. Though they are not as effective as auto darkening helmets but are good enough to be used by a beginner. They are also relatively cheaper than auto darkening ones.

Components involved in a welding helmet:

• The shell
• Outer cover plate
• Filter lens
• Retainer lens
• Gasket

Ensure that all the parts of the helmet are in proper condition before purchasing one.

Why it is important to use a welding helmet?

• Infrared radiation is emitted during welding and can easily cause cataract and retinal burning to eyes.
• UV radiation is also emitted during welding process which causes burning in the eyes.
• Also in the dark places, the eyes can’t manage to adjust the change in brightness due to welding.
• A welding helmet protects the eyes against flying sparks.
• A good welding helmet also enables you to see clearly through it and automatically darkens as soon as it detects the welding arc.

So, it becomes extremely important to wear a welding helmet as it acts as a shield for your eyes during the welding work.
