Ways to Deal with Chemotherapy-Induced Nausea

by Akash Sharma Akash Sharma
One of the biggest challenges of undergoing chemotherapy can be dealing with nausea. While not everyone experiences this side effect and symptoms can be very mild, it can have a significant impact over one’s appetite. The amount of food one is able to intake is also impacted, leading to weight loss. There are ways to deal with chemotherapy-induced nausea, knowing which can help you deal with discomfort and keep it minimal-

Avoid Strong Smells

Taste sensors have a direct link to your nose. Instead of making frequent visits to the kitchen, it’s recommended to take a good nap in your bedroom. Keeping the doors and windows open while your friends or family is cooking will also help neutralize smells that may trigger nausea.

Nausea Medications

There are many medications available to ease out nausea. However, it is recommended to consult your doctor before taking any. Amongst the common medications used to treat nausea include ondansetron (Zofran) and prochlorperazine maleate (Compazine). These medicines are best taken an hour before eating. These medicines help to increase the amount of food that you can intake.

Avoid Warm Foods

Cold foods such as ice cream and yogurt are tolerated well by the body. If you wish to have something else, make sure to cool it down for at least 30 minutes before eating. If you don’t feel like waiting, simply place the dish bowl in a bowl with ice to cool it down quickly.

Use Ginger and Peppermint

One of the oldest remedies for treating nausea include the use of ginger and peppermint. It can be consumed in the form of tea or candies made of ginger or peppermint. You can also put a drop of peppermint essential oil on a tissue and inhale anytime you feel like.

Drink Liquids In-Between Meals/Snacks

If you fill up your stomach with liquids during mealtime, there will be less room for food. You will end up feeling full faster. This doesn’t mean you have to give up on water completely. Staying hydrated is equally important. Drink liquids in between your meals and keep the sips smaller during meal times.

Be it breast cancer or any other type of cancer, chemotherapy plays an important role in cancer treatment. However, make sure to consult experts such as Dr. Sidharth Sahni Apollo before going for the treatment.
