Ways in Which Piston Rings Ensure Process Safety

by Tarun Yadav Sr. Seo Excutive

A Piston ring can be described as a split ring that fixes or fits itself on the larger or outer diameter of the Piston, which is a part of a reciprocating engine.  These are usually found in engines like internal combustion engine or a steam engine. Piston rings serve three basic functions:

1.       It seals the combustion chamber thus preventing any flow of gas from the combustion chamber to the crank and stops any chance of leakage.

2.       The heat from the piston is conducted to the cylinder wall as these rings are good conductors of heat.

3.       It controls as well as regulates the oil consumed by the engine.

The gaps of a piston ring decreases to a few thousands of an inch when in it is compressed inside the bore of the cylinder.

These rings are manufactured as according to its usage requirements. The material is selected on the basis of the application of the piston loop by highly experienced technical people. The material required for these customized piston rings is tested and analyzed before it is introduced to the manufacturing process. The materials used for Piston rings are varied an commonly include Bronze, cast iron as well as the different grades of PTFE.

A Piston ring is specified by the required sealing, the precision and its tolerances and accuracies. The techniques of manufacturing these rings are perfected by practice. Before its sold to the consumers stringent quality checks are performed by the piston rings manufacturer to make sure they live up to their reputation.

A gasket is basically a mechanical seal which is used to fill the gap between two or more adjoining surfaces. It is commonly done for the purpose of prevention of leakage from or into the fixed objects while these are subjected to compression.  Most machine parts have an irregular surface and while gaskets do the job of joining they fill these irregularities so that no chance of leakage is left. Gaskets are generally manufactured by cutting from flat sheet materials. These materials may be rubber, metal, cork, felt, paper, silicone, fibreglass, PTFE etc. It is preferred that gaskets manufacturer use such a material that allows itself to be deformed. This answers the requirement of filling the space it is designed for as well as accounting for slight irregularities that is common in machine surfaces.

Valve Springs are basically metal bellows which are filled air which is compressed under pressure. It is an alternative technology which assures better efficiency than the traditional metal wire springs which are used to close the valves in internal combustion engines that operate at a very high speed. In racing cars and very high speed combustion engines the metal springs are doomed because they were unable to retract themselves quick enough so that the piston would be cleared. These light weight air bellows has the ability to overcome this problem of speed and eliminate any chance of valve piston interaction. Thus, valve spring manufacturers are now sought by the high speed combustion engine designers to improve and increase their efficiency of operation.
