Water Filtration vs Purification – Get the Facts!
by Eureka Forbes Home Appliance Providers
We all now know the importance of
safe and pure drinking water, but before you zero in on the kind of
purification systems for your home, you should know the difference between
filtration and purification. Should you get home one of the water filters
or should you opt for one of the best water purifiers? There are many
purifier models, but what should one look for in the best water purifiers in
India? Before you check out the models and features, read on for more on
the filtration vs purification debate.
Filtration
Water filtration is a process wherein
any kind of impurities are prevented from staying in or entering water by way
of a barrier or a filter. Boiling is also a filtration method. Filters could be
a porous material like activated carbon. However, filters are not highly
effective in removing every kind of toxin, especially biological ones, from
water. Filters won’t be able to remove viruses from water. Also, many filters
are low-cost when compared to purifiers.
Purification
On the other hand, a purifier uses
reverse osmosis, deionisation or ultraviolet technologies to remove all kinds
of contaminants present in water. In fact, purifiers with HEPA filters can
remove impurities up to the size of 0.3 micron at an efficiency of 99.97 percent.
Reverse osmosis is a highly effective
process wherein water is passed under high pressure via a membrane. It is
useful if the water you consume is supplied from groundwater sources via a bore
well. Such water typically contains a high concentration of total dissolved
solids. It can render your water hard and also in many cases harmful. A UV
purifier helps remove any kind of microorganisms such as bacteria or viruses in
the water. There are purifiers that have both the features, and are called
universal purifiers.
Before you choose…
The difference between filtration and
purification is that in the former, impurities are prevented from entering
water while in purification, impurities are removed from water.
When you choose a system for your
home, you should consider the water source. If you live in a neighbourhood
where water is supplied from groundwater sources, you could pick an RO system.
If the water is supplied from a lake or a freshwater source you could opt for a
UV one.
Modern-day water purification systems
also have filtration systems combined as part of the features. There are also
any smart features that today’s purifiers come with, such as a mineral guard
where essential minerals are retained and a taste enhancer. Choose wisely ad
stay healthy!
