Advantages and Disadvantages of Upright and Cylinder Vacuum Cleaners

by Eureka Forbes Home Appliance Providers

A vacuum cleaner has become a necessity of the modern household. It enables us to keep our living environment clean, while being extremely convenient and easy to use. As opposed to the conventional way of sweeping the floor and other surfaces, a vacuum cleaner sucks the dust from your carpets, floor, and other hard to reach areas with powerful suction. The dust is stored in its dustbin or bag, which can be easily removed to dispose off the dirt. While the idea of buying a vacuum cleaner sounds exciting, it is not as simple as walking into a store and picking up the best vacuum cleaner available, or the one that fits your budget and needs.

A common question that most first-time buyers face is, “Should I buy an upright or a cylinder vacuum cleaner?” Now, even though these terms may not be the most technical of them all, buyers should pay attention to the advantages and disadvantages of both the types. Below are some points that give a clear idea about both upright and cylinder vacuum cleaners, and help the buyer make an informed decision.

Upright Vacuum Cleaner

Advantages—

Larger Head

The upright vacuum cleaner has a larger vacuuming head, hence, covers a far wider area than the cylinder vacuum cleaner’s narrow hose. This is useful when you have a big house, and saves vacuuming time considerably.

Powerful Brushes

Upright vacuum cleaners come with powerful brushes that dust off particles stuck deep in the carpet for easy suction. This proves useful if you have pets at home that shed fur.

High Dust Capacity

Upright vacuum cleaners have comparably higher dust capacity than the cylinder vacuum cleaners, that means you’ll have to clean the dustbin less often.

Disadvantages—

Heavier

Due to its large vacuuming head and storage capacity, the upright vacuum cleaner is heavier, and hence, harder to push and lift.

Unable to clean narrow areas

Another disadvantage of the upright vacuum cleaner is that it cannot reach the narrow areas like corners, under-furniture, stairs, etc.

Cylinder Vacuum Cleaner

Advantages—

Portable and Light

A cylinder vacuum cleaner is light due to its smaller size. Hence, it is easy to lift and carry around the house.

Cleans hard to reach areas

Unlike the upright vacuum cleaner, the cylinder vacuum cleaner has a suction hose. This makes it convenient to clean areas such as the area under the furniture, stairs, and other narrow areas.

Versatile

The cylinder vacuum cleaner is suitable for cleaning various surfaces such as carpets, hard floors, and rugs.

Disadvantages—

Less Dust Capacity

Due to its portable size, the cylinder vacuum cleaner comes with less storage than the upright vacuum cleaner. This means the dustbin has to be emptied more often.

Unsuitable for large areas

Having a smaller suction head makes the cylinder vacuum cleaner unsuitable for vacuuming large areas and carpets, as it increases the vacuuming time.
