Useful Tips, Know Before to Pick Packing Boxes

by Austin Baines Content Writer

  • The following packing supplies are suggested: Cartons of various sizes, Tape, Packing paper, Bubble wrap, large markers, Small bags for hardware, large clear bags for pillows, cushions, stuffed animals, and other non-breakable items.
  • Mark top of boxes with placement (room/floor going to) using large black markers.
  • Mark boxes "Fragile" or "Glass" if applicable with large red markers.
  • Place hardware from furniture in plastic bags and tape to the underside of the unit or in drawers (out of the movers’ way). Do not tape drawers / doors shut? This can damage your furniture. Movers city name will use stretch-wrap for this as needed.
  • Backup files before packing computers. Use factory (heavyweight) boxes to pack electronics and appliances. Do not pack multiple heavy items in any one box.
  • Pack heavy, unbreakable stuff at the underside of boxes. Pack fewer fragile items on top this, with lighter items on top. Easily broken items should be boxed separately or with lightweight stuff only.  Layer the top and bottom of the box with cushion (wadded paper, pillows, towels, etc.). "Fragile" boxes should not "rattle" when moved.
  • Pack plane breakables:  mirrors, pictures, trays, platters, shelves, large serving dishes, plates in a standing position. Do not pack these things laying flat.
  • Wrap large pictures in blankets (cell pads if you have them) and then slide inside a flat, un-made box (picture box if you have one). You can cut and fold most boxes to fit as needed. Tape all open seams and mark:  "Painting" or "Glass".
  • Remember that you are answerable for what and how you pack. Best Movers Adelaide are not guilty for damage resulting from inappropriately packed or taped boxes.
  • Do not pack the following for movers to move or store: perishables, hazardous materials, paints, cleansers, chemicals, solvents, insecticides, weapons or ammo, combustibles, flammables, aerosols, oils, liquids, fluids, batteries, matches or candles. Damages caused by/or to these items is not covered. This also includes any articles of extraordinary value, documents, or specie including: money, jewelry, coin or stamp collections, etc. which are not covered under the movers liability insurance unless specifically accepted in writing by the mover (estimator). Remove above items from areas to be packed/moved prior to the movers’ arrival.
  • If you are moving long distance or have two or more moving companies Involved, we recommend numbering your boxes and making an inventory list.

Suggested box sizes for packing:

  • 1.5 Small----------books, tapes, albums, tools, small heavy, fragile items/appliances.
  • 3.1 Medium------ medium heavy items/appliances, glasses, plates, serving dishes, lamp shades and most electrical equipment.
  • 4.5 Large---------clothing, linens, pots/pans, medium to lightweight items/appliances.
  • 6.1 Extra Large--very lightweight items, child's plastic toys, stuffed animals, cushions, pillows, comforters, Tupperware, and consolidating smaller boxes.
  • 5.2 Dish-Pack----china, silver, crystal, heavy and fragile items, lamps, and pictures.
  • Wardrobe Boxes- Hanging clothes, coats and suits.

Note: If you are not familiar with packing this type of box, consider packing china, crystal, and very fragile items in a small to medium size box instead.  Dish cartons are very heavy when fully packed and crushing can occur from improper packing.
