Two New Puppet Shows To Bring A Child-Friendly Flavour To Brighton Fringe

As England’s largest annual arts festival that also welcomes performers on an open-access basis, Brighton Fringe is no stranger to new and intriguing art forms. Sure enough, this year’s Fringe will be much the same during its run from 3^rd May until 2^nd June.

The talented character comic was nominated for Best Newcomer at Edinburgh Fringe some 15 years ago now, although over the coming months, it’s the Southern Fringes – in Brighton and Hastings – that are her big focus.

So, why should puppetry enthusiasts keep an eye out for her this summer?

Well, the answer’s very simple: she’s bringing two interactive puppet shows to Brighton Fringe that are especially geared to children aged between four and eight.

The shows in question are The Crab Prince and Peg in the Gallery, which are both performed by Joanna and written by her alongside Joseph Nixon. The 45-to-50-minute productions will both take place at Bom-Bane’s on Brighton’s George Street, on 4^th May and 11^th May respectively.

The first show commences at 12:30, and entails Marina the Marine Explorer telling the story of Scuttle the Crab.

Peg in the Gallery, meanwhile, follows Marina the cleaner as she prepares to present a talk ‘Housework World. Tidying Fun for All the Family’ – only for her sensible conference to be thrown into messy chaos with the impending arrival of Lady Peggy Valerie Mallory, Patron of The Arts.

Joanna has described the productions as “two very fun and interactive children’s shows”, explaining to The Argus: “I wanted to do something for children who may not have as much access to arts.

“It’s a comedy show and that’s what I know best. But I managed to shoehorn some of my love of art in there as well.

“Creativity is so important and the fact that it seems to be sidelined in our schools at the moment is baffling. All the economists know that the future is in creativity. It’s so bizarre that it’s sidelined.”
