Transfer Case: Purpose and Principle Behind It

by Pradeep S. Digital Marketing Strategist
A proper understanding of any automobile's internal components will help you go a long way, especially during servicing. Let's consider the transfer case in this scenario. It mainly transfers power using drive shafts to the front and rear axles in vehicles.

With such an understanding, you are in a position of getting reliable automobile servicing with reputable technicians like the Oil CHANGERS.

Understanding the purpose and principle of the transfer case will help you reduce the risk of premature failure and wear in your automobile.

Principle Behind Transfer Cases
This component is mainly designed and specialized for four-wheel drive and all-wheel drive vehicles; it helps power each of the four wheels. The transfer case splits up engine power sending it to all the wheels. As a result, the drivetrain system helps power your vehicle.

When the transfer case receives power from the engine, it diverts it to the front and rear axles. It either uses chains or hydraulics and other gears to sustain this process.

The power moves from the engine to the transmission. The transmission sends power to the rest of the system, including driveshafts, transfer cases, drive axles, differentials, and wheels making your car move.

Purpose of the Transfer Cases
  • The setup's primary purpose for the four-wheel vehicle is to transfer power to all the wheels from the vehicle's transmission.
  • It is utilized together with the gearbox in transmitting torque and power to the rear axle. Thus, the driver can either shift to two-wheel drive or engage four-wheel drive during off-road or rough terrains. Its ability to synchronize the difference in rotation of the front and rear wheels makes it possible to set low range gears, especially for rugged or off-road use.
  • The transfer case also facilities the vehicle's ability to drive in high or low gear whenever needed.
