by TM Maria Be a king in your own kingdom

Welcome to Tottenham Hotspur news. Much transpired in the just completed 2018-19 spurs campaign including the opening of a new stadium and playing in Champions League final. Now that the season is over, it is the ideal time for evaluating how our players performed. In this edition of Tottenham news review, we shall look at the defenders in terms of their performance, injuries, contracts, etc.

Tottenham Hotspur's 2018–19 campaign season was the 27th Premier League season. Also, it was the 41st successive season for the team in the uppermost division of the world’s renowned football league system. It was indeed a great season for Tottenham although the performance deteriorated as the league neared the end. When the defense power dropped, late in the season, our performance dropped immediately. This showed how important their solid defensive performances had been from the start of the 2018-19 season.

Tottenham proved to be a strong contender for various cups including the Champions League where the club finished second after losing to Liverpool 2-0. In the just completed 2018-19 Season, Spurs finished fourth securing a chance to play in the 2019-20 Champions League campaign. Consequently, in the EFL Cup, Tottenham made it into the semi-finals.

Chelsea FC, however, eliminated spurs in the penalty shootout after a 2-2 draw in the aggregate score. Also, Spurs FC was knocked out of the FA Cup by Crystal Palace FC in the fourth round.

According to the statistics Tottenham’s overall winning percentage in the 2018-19 Season was about 60%. And this winning streak can be owed to our defenders as much as we owe it to the attackers like Son and Keane. This is because most of our games were basically decided by single goal margin and this can be counted on our backline.

Spurs center backs led the defensive organization whereas the full backs were often rotated. These occasional rotations on our full backs exposed the unpredictability of our right and left backs. Essentially, Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld maintained their services as the defensive barricade pairing now in four seasons. On the other hand, the youngster, Davinson Sanchez (23) was a very promising prospect in only his second season at Spurs. Also, Juan Foyth has shown his potential after being promoted to the first team.

Here is a review of all Spurs’ defenders in the 2018-19 campaign.

Kieran Trippier (Right back/ RWB)

He was riding very high during the start of the season. He had just finished his international duty with England in the world cup and the momentum was appealing. However, later he was seen as a flop of the season by a number of Tottenham news although he scored one goal. He also scored an own goal while playing against Chelsea. His tackles success was about 55% where he enjoyed only 8 clean shits in 27 appearances in the last premier league campaign.

Danny Rose (Left Back / LWB)

The 28 yrs. old England international whose tackling was quite appealing throughout the season although not satisfactory. Across all competitions, He gave 3 assists and made one error leading to a goal. He made 26 appearances in the just completed 2018-19 premier league, winning 15 and losing 10 games.

Toby Alderweireld (Centre Back)

He played mostly as a right back. At the age of 30, Alderweireld made 34 premier league appearances, winning 21 and losing 11 games. His tackling success was about 68% which was quite impressive comparing to the quality of EPL attackers. He had 12 clean shits but sadly conceded 31 goals in all games played.

Jan Vertonghen (Center-back/Left back)

The Belgian is a versatile defender who can switch the left and Centre back position. In the last 2018-19 season, he made 27 appearances winning 15 and losing 11 games. At 32 years he proved to be a leader on and off the pitch being the Spurs second vice-captain. A hamstring injury kept him out of the pitch but he maintained 6 clean shits in the 2018-19 season.

Serge Aurier (right back)

After a poor performance with Ivory Coast, most fans want him out of Spurs. The 24 years old defender has had a poor 2018-19 season although he played crucial tackles to win the ball from dangerous strikes. His future at Spurs is still yet to be determined now that fans want him sold according to Tottenham news now.

Davinson Sánchez (Center back/ Right back)

Just turned 23 and proving to be a great asset for the club. In his second season at Spurs, Sánchez managed to play 8 champions league games, 2 FA cup, 5 EFL, and 23 premier league appearances. He scored once and gave an amazing assist across all competitions for Spurs. He made great tackles in the last season and most fans made him one of their favorites. On the other hand, Sanchez showed inconsistency in some games but we won’t judge him a lot because he is still young.

Others

Kyle Walker-Peters (RB/LB) has made 9 appearances with one Champions league. He is still young and his 5 assists and 3 clean shits continue to build his profile at spurs.

Juan Foyth is a Centre back that can as be played as a defensive midfielder. He just turned 21 in January and started 14 catches the entire season. He conceded two penalties which shook him with the fact that he hasn’t fully developed to play in elite games. However, the kid proved to be a great prospect for Spurs in the just-completed season. His red card against Bournemouth branded him negatively but it is still too early and harsh to judge the youngster.
