1. Columbia Becomes the First Latin-American Nation to Join NATO

After reaching an agreement to join NATO in May of 2017, Columbia finally signed and made the formal announcement of joining NATO nations as a global partner in 2018. Under the pact, the Latin American nation is now obliged to participate in all affairs relating to international organized crime, Maritime activities, and cyber-security issues that concern any of the 29 member countries of this organization. But being a global partner, Columbia is under no obligation to play any direct part in the organization’s military actions. What’s also worth mentioning is the fact that Columbia is the first Latin-American nation to become a part of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation.

2. China Launches Zhangheng 1: Its First  Sieso-Electromagnetic Satellite

On 2 Feb 2018, China launched Zhangheng 1, its first sieso-electromagnetic satellite. The satellite was launched from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center, located in the Gobi desert. Zhangheng-1 is China’s first attempt to monitor and collect information regarding seismic activities that might result in big and devastating earthquakes from an outer- space level. The technological leap will help scientists and other experts study seismic precursors for a period of five years.

3. India Wins 2018 Under-19 WC

On Feb 3, 2018, India’s U-19 cricket team lifted the world cup for the fourth time. The championship was hosted by New Zealand. The young winning side was led by Prithvi Shaw. “Man of the Match” award went to Manjot Kalra for his match-winning knock of 101(not out) that helped his team win the final match against Australia by 8 wickets. Shubhman Gill was awarded “Player of the Tournament” for his outstanding and consistent contribution to the winning side. It’s notable that India now holds the record of winning the U-19 ICC World Cup trophy for the most number of times; four in total.

4. In a Historic First, Britain Gives the Nod to Three-Parent Baby Treatment

In 2018, Britain became the first country to make “Three-parent baby” fertility treatment a legal medical practice. The treatment uses Mitochondrial Replacement Therapy (MRT). The therapy uses genetic material of one more woman, other than the biological mother and, that is infused in the genetic structure of the embryo resting in her mother’s womb. This is done to remove or stop any genetic disease that could be carried from the biological mother to her offsprings.
