Top 3 Best Food for Rabbits

by Tammy Martin Blogger

What you should feed your rabbits is different from what your rabbits want to eat.  The digestive system of rabbits is quite sensitive, so it is very essential that you know what your pets need to eat.

What Rabbits Should Eat

Rabbits should have daily intake of fiber to make sure that their digestive system will function normally.  Hay, grass and vegetables are what they should be eating most of the time.  Giving those pellets all the time could make them obese and may result to digestive diseases.  Sure, there is maybe some fiber in pellets, but this is usually grounded into its finest form and will not be able to stimulate digestive function.  In addition, roughage, like hay, can also prevent hairballs and will keep rabbit’s teeth well-trimmed.  Pellets are just additional food to provide a balance diet for your rabbit or it is too picky.Anymore that pellets, hay and vegetables can already be considered as a treat and should be taken moderately.  Remember that the rabbit’s digestive system is very prone to mild upsets, especially if they have inappropriate diet.  Taking more than enough pellets should be avoided, especially if the rabbit is already overweight.

·        Hay – Make sure that you always have hay on hand like oat hay and timothy.  There are rabbits that don’t eat as much as they should the first time, but putting fresh hay two or three times will reduce the number of pellets you give them.  Once he is hungry he will likely eat them soon enough.  The rabbitexperts.com is recommending alfalfa hays to baby rabbits and giving grass hays once they turned six months.  Alfalfa hay is rich in protein and calcium.

·        Vegetables – According to vegetables should be the biggest portion of your pet’s diet.  The rabbit must consume about 2 to 4 cups of fresh vegetables each day.  If the rabbit is eating mostly pellets, make the change gradually to let his digestive system adjust.  Just add new vegetable each time to his diet, so if in case a problem occur, it is easy to tell which one is causing it.  The best vegetables are carrots, broccoli, parsley, turnip greens, mustard greens, collard greens, endive spinach, kale, carrot tops, lettuce and romaine.  These vegetables are rich in oxalates.  Avoid giving them potatoes, beans and cauliflower since these vegetables can cause some problems.

·        Pellets – are made for commercial production and very rich in calories.  They cause obesity and some health problems if consumed often.  They do provide nutrition for rabbits since they offer balanced nutrients, but experts say that they should be restricted and just .give plenty of vegetables and grass hays instead
