Three Important Pieces of Lab Equipment

by Kevin Smith Author
Working inside of a lab can be an extremely dangerous and potentially hazardous situation. There are many different obstacles that are presented that require immediate attention and adherence to many different safety protocols is of the utmost importance. There are many different types of lab equipment that play a role in the safety and efficiency with which lab work is conducted. These types of equipment range from those that protect the body to those that protect the materials being used in the experiments. This article will look at three important pieces of lab equipment and what they do to protect the lab technicians or the experiments themselves.

One popular item that many people will recognize is a hazmat suit. These full body suits cover the subject from head to toe, allowing for protection from a wide variety of different harmful substances such as gases and toxic vapors. The suits are used in situations where materials can splatter on the individual wearing the suit or instances where different types of radioactive materials are being used. They are plentiful in supply, and relatively affordable as a result. They are extremely important for ensuring the safety of lab technicians, government officials and anyone who may be exposed to dangerous substances in any situation.

The use of a centrifuge is extremely popular in laboratories all over the world. A centrifuge is a mechanical device that will hold a variety of different test tubes in several different cylinders. These test tubes will often contain materials that are being tested for any variety of disease or imperfection. The test tubes are placed within the cylinders and the centrifuges started, allowing the mechanical portion of the centrifuge to spin and separate materials from each other. For example, the centrifuge will isolate blood cells from glucose within the blood, allowing for more efficient testing to be done.

A lesser-known piece of laboratory equipment that is a vital importance is what is known as a biosafety hood. Biosafety hoods are similar to the top of the stove, where an overhanging piece will come out from the wall or unit and act as a barrier from materials that either splatter or stain or could even be harmful. Biosafety hoods are an essential part of laboratory equipment and experiments, keeping those conducting the experiment safe from a variety of harmful gases, vapors, toxins and other harmful substances. It is an essential piece of equipment and is widely used in virtually any laboratory across the world.

There are many important pieces of laboratory equipment that play vital roles in protecting the subjects conducting experiments as well as the subjects of the experiments. Everything from hazmat suits, to centrifuges to biosafety hoods play an essential and protective role in the safety and efficiency of virtually everything that is located in the lab.
