Things To Consider Before Getting Pregnant

by Ankita Sehgal Freelance Blogger, Lives in New Delhi
A young couple may have it all- a successful job, the perfect attitude or a luxurious lifestyle, but getting pregnant and taking up its responsibilities require preparations not everyone is ready for. Unlike our beloved movies, really makes us realize the hardships of preparing for a baby. Any maternity hospital in Delhi or some other area will provide you with a never-ending list of all the Do’s and Don’ts during pregnancy, but not all of them can be followed simultaneously with our daily schedule. That is why this article brings you the ‘essentials’ to consider during a pregnancy.

Smoking During Pregnancy-

No matter how much you relish on those long morning cigarette drags, it is one habit that you have to give up. Smoking may be dangerous to you, but it is fatal for your unborn infant. Various complications may arise including bleeding and problems with the placenta, on which your baby relies for oxygen and nutrients, a premature labor or a baby with a low birth weight. At times, it may also lead to a miscarriage. So start revolting against your cravings till the time you are pregnant.

Control Your Caffeine Intake-

Caffeine is a stimulant and the effects it has on you are similar to the effects it has on the unborn infant. But as the metabolism of the fetus is not the same as you, it will have an adverse effect on the fetus. From unorganized sleeping patterns to health complications and even miscarriage, caffeine can be the only reason for all of them. Most studies suggest that having less than two standard cups of coffee a day is safe.

Consumption of Alcohol-

While many recommend that alcohol intake should be stopped entirely during pregnancy, Twenge says "It does affect fertility if you drink a lot, but having a glass or two with dinner on the weekends is unlikely to have much effect on fertility." Either way, consumption of too much alcohol can be bad for the baby and can lead to miscarriage. The most vital time to lay off the booze is during the earliest stages of pregnancy. This is when the baby's heart and spinal cord begin to develop. Alcohol can be linked to fertility problems and miscarriage.

Watch on the Weight-

If you can cut down on some weight, this is the time to do it. Start exercising or maintain a diet for starters. Not only trimming a few kilos will help you get pregnant, but also, one will encounter fewer complications during the time of
delivery.

The Finances-

Babies are like vacuum cleaners when it comes to money. The spending just never ends. Starting with diapers, food, clothes, to school, and college, everything is going to cost a lot of money and you will have no choice but to pay for it. So, before making the choice of getting pregnant, you should know if you can afford it.
