Overview

Endometrium or uterine lining of a woman is where a developing embryo implants in the initial days of her pregnancy. It is necessary for the embryo to implant into the endometrium to achieve pregnancy. Estrogen and progesterone are the two hormones which get developed from the ovaries and are responsible for thickening and preparing the uterine lining for implantation. Where estrogen works as thickening the thin endometrium, progesterone, on the other hand, causes the thickened endometrium to develop the features required for implantation.
Those who advance for assisted reproductive techniques like in-vitro fertilization the thickness of the lining is supposed to be very crucial. The thickness of the lining will be measured by the physician before transferring the embryo in order to ensure that it is adequately thick to allow for implantation. For providing the best atmosphere to the embryo, there is a requirement of a receptive, nourishing and thick uterine lining. The ideal thickness is supposed to be near about 7 to 8 mm and it must show a three-layered look on an ultrasound. It has been said in the studies that if a woman contains constantly thin endometrium regardless of obtaining a sufficient amount of estrogen, there are chances for the pregnancy to reduce. If endometrium lining is resulting as being too thin, there can be problems to arise at the time of in-vitro fertilization. Like there can be early pregnancy loss and failed implantation.

Thin Endometrium Causes

There can be different causes regarding thin endometrium. Out of which, the first one can be a low estrogen level in the woman's body. If she doesn't contain adequate estrogen, it can cause thin endometrium lining. You can consult with the doctor so that he will check the estrogen level with the help of a blood test. Even if the estrogen level is supposed to be normal, a thin endometrium lining can be due to prior uterine infection that has damaged the lining of the uterus and causing scar tissues to appear.
Another cause is the infection of the endometrial cells known as chronic endometritis. It causes irritation of the uterine lining that put off the embryo to implant. However it is not termed as a life-threatening infection, but still, there is a requirement of treating such types of problems with an immediate effect. It can be cured with the help of antibiotics. But if the condition looks to be a bit critical and the infection is severe, the doctor may prescribe to intravenous fluids and bed rest in the hospital.
The next cause of thin endometrium is supposed to be less common and it is about decreased blood flow. Sometimes a condition takes place where the endometrial lining fails to thicken because of inadequate blood flow. There can be an implementation of ultrasound to measure the flow of blood to the patient's uterus. There can be cases where uterine fibroids become the cause of affecting the chances of pregnancy. They are gentle growths that take place in the uterus. Their size is too small that it can't be detected by a human eye or large enough to cause swelling or bulges in the uterus. Surgery can be done to remove these types of fibroids.
