A thesis statement is a claim that expresses the primary claim of an essay. It provides a direct answer to the question an article is seeking to answer. A thesis statement directs the rest of the essay as the rest of the paragraphs elaborate on ideas that revolve around the thesis. It is the last sentence in the introduction paragraph of articles. The structure and content of a thesis statement are formulated depending on the type of essay and what will be expounded in the body paragraphs.

Analytical thesis statements are used in analytical essays. The questions that analytical essays seek to answer are how and why. Therefore, analytical thesis statements should explain how something is done and why the different actions are taken. The focus of the thesis statement is to claim the subject that needs to be analyzed. Another type of thesis statement is the expository thesis statement.

An expository thesis statement is used in expository essays that seek to explain, illustrate, clarify, or expound something to the readers for clarity. For expository essays, the thesis statement should summarize what the author will tell about the subject in the rest of the article. The rest of the essay revolves around the thesis statement. Considering that the expository essay follows the five-paragraph approach, a thesis statement should combine the three points to be expounded in the body. For example, the design of the airplane allows for fast movement of air above its wings, causing air to move below the wings and generating an upward force that exceeds the weight of the plane. The summarized points are then expounded on through the provision of evidence and statistics. An argumentative thesis statement is the third type of thesis statement.

Argumentative thesis statements are used in argumentative essays that seek to prove a position. In argumentative essays, a debatable claim is presented in the thesis statement at the end of the introduction. A thesis statement for an argumentative essay is formulated through a combination of a qualification statement, the stance, and a rationale. The qualification statement is intended to acknowledge the opposition of the position the writer takes in an essay. An explanation is the main reason that informs the position taken in the article. Therefore, a strong argumentative thesis statement clearly explains the position of the author regarding a topic.

In conclusion, thesis statements are structured depending on the type of essay. An analytical thesis statement is designed to answer the question of how and why. Expository thesis statements seek to summarize the main points to be discussed in the body paragraphs. An argumentative thesis claims the topic of argument and contains a qualifying statement, a stance, and a rationale.
