The wood refinishing trend that’s dominating 2018: Weathering

If you want to change the way your wood furniture and/or cabinets look, there are many ways you can do that. One such way is to use a wood finishing technique called weathering. Weathering is meant to deliberately give wood items a vintage and a rustic appearance.

Weathered wood looks absolutely magnificent, but how can you finish your wood items in a way that they look old, aged and unimaginably beautiful?

It’s likely that your wood furniture and cabinets have already been coated or varnished for a glossy look. So, the first thing you need to do is to wear down the gloss. A sanding paper will be perfect for this job. Once the surface is prepared, you can go ahead with painting it with either a brush or spray. It’s important to use only high-quality paint, something like General Finishes paint, in order to achieve a professional and even finish in the end.

After the paint has dried, it’s time to do the weathering. Start by gently sanding the corners and edges, allowing the bare wood to be exposed in spots. This will give the wood a more aged and timelessly elegant look. That being said, you should know when to stop, or else the wood would look more deteriorated than aged. No worries, though, you can always reapply your General Finish paint and start again.

Weathering is sitting on top of the wood refinishing trends for this year simply because weathered wood appears to have a lot more character than other types of refinished wood.
