The Significance Of Fasting On A Thursday

by Sanjana V. Digital Marketer

Fasting or Vrat is to abstain from physical needs to gain something in the spiritual realm. Vedic scriptures state that vrat helps your body and mind to be in perfect harmony. Vrata means to Vow, resolve, and show willpower and devotion; thus, Vrat helps us to surrender ourselves to the supreme energy.

What Are The Benefits Of Fasting?

  • Fasting has many health benefits, including obesity control, a decrease in blood sugar levels and improved heart functions.

  • Religious fasting that Hindus carry out on specific days to seek special blessings from their favourite deities also has an enormous impact on energy balance and level of stress. For instance, worshipping Lord Shiva and conducting Amavasya vrat on Monday would confer all the pleasures of life. This vrat bestows a suitable life partner to unmarried men & women and grants marital peace for married couples. It is believed that Sola som var fasts provide relief from various health issues and improve financial status.

  • Thursday fasting, or Brihaspati puja vrat, is observed to appease Lord Brihaspati, the lord of the planet Jupiter which wards off obstacles in marital life. Jupiter, or Brihaspati, is a giant planet and is considered the most influential and auspicious planet in the horoscope. Brihaspati is the natural benefactor of wealth, success and foreign education and foreign travel. His Vrat, coupled with prayers, is said to please him instantly, and you will gain his divine boons. Thursday is the day of the Guru Brihaspati, or the vrat is observed on guruvar only.

  • Wearing yellow dresses brings good luck on Vrihaspativar, or Thursday. The people who choose to carry out the fasting eat once during the whole day and worship Brihaspati with all the pooja samagri in the morning, along with chanting the specific mantras of Brihaspati.

The Brihaspatibaar Vrat Vidhi

  • You can start the fasting ritual on any Thursday. Most preferably, it begins on the first Thursday of Shukla paksha for 16 Thursdays.

  • Brihaspati pooja Samagri includes yellow lentils, jaggery, turmeric and banana.

  • Start taking a bath early in the morning, and put on yellow clothing. Sprinkle holy water and turmeric on the Lord.

  • Now offer yellow-tinged rice grains, chant the Vedic mantras and slokas, and read the Vrat Katha.

  • A ghee lamp must be lit during the whole ritual. You can offer yellow-coloured sweets.

  • You are not allowed to eat salty dishes.

  • The yellow clothes must be given away to charity.

  • If properly followed, the vrat grants wish fulfillment for its devotees.
