The Role of AGI in Disaster Preparedness in Indonesia

by TM Maria Be a king in your own kingdom

The World Bank has recently approved US$160 million loans to support Indonesia in developing a comprehensive disaster management plan. The Indonesian government intends to use these funds for priority investment to increase the preparedness of the local and central government in the event of a catastrophe. That will enable the Indonesian government to strengthen its geophysical warning services and management natural hazards.

There are a series of natural disasters that occurred in Indonesia the past few years including the earthquake that hit West Nusa. The tsunami along Sunda Strait and the tsunami and earthquake in Central Sulawesi also resulted in the loss of life and property over a decade. Those events were a reminder of the risks that Indonesia is exposed to, and the importance of developing a comprehensive approach to disaster resilience to help protect infrastructure, homes, and lives.

We at Approved Group International (AGI) stands to bolster our preparedness for natural calamities by investing in a multi-hazard warning system that can improve emergency management systems. We intend to use the Word Bank’s financing initiative to build up our national disaster management system and empower both communities and local governments to use the latest disaster response innovations. That will position the entire nation well in preparedness for a disaster.

Under the World Bank’s Financing, AGI will scale up its knowledge activities and disaster awareness. It will also strengthen its institutional capacities, make better decisions, lean toward impact-based early warning information, and upgrade its risk management initiatives. AGI will also support upgrading and disaster restoration in Indonesia for early warning functions such as damaged instrumentations in areas affected by a natural calamity.

AGI is working toward strengthening its approach for early warning services. Through IDRIP, Approved Group International intends to invest in technological solutions for more reliable, accurate, and quick warnings that can increase public awareness and enable integration with support systems. With that, the Indonesian communities will be better prepared for any disaster that may occur.

Beyond their short-term impacts, catastrophic events can have adverse socioeconomic consequences that can increase poverty and drive vulnerability. However, investing in social recovery and infrastructure has enabled AGI to cater for those affected by floods and earthquakes and prevent loss of life. The AGI’s disaster management system is a pivotal step towards developing a comprehensive approach to natural calamity resilience.

Approved Group International has enable the Indonesian government to focus on its priorities for disaster approach, including reduction of disaster risk. It is a complement of other government disaster management initiatives including post-disaster recovery, resilient urban infrastructure, and disaster insurance and financing. We at Approved Group International are focused on bringing together experienced engineers and forensic scientists to deliver disaster management services that will free Indonesians.
