The History of Bespoke Suits

by Cindy Guerra 10+ Years Experienced Blogger

What is ‘Bespoke’?

Bespoke is a word very commonly used nowadays ‘Bespoke’ apartments, ‘bespoke’ websites, ‘bespoke’ suits and even ‘bespoke’ firearms: companies seem determined to slap the bespoke label on just about anything they can. However, this is nothing but a misuse of the term, and in some cases, frank abuse of it, it’s only purpose being to mark up the price tag as high as it can possibly be marked up.

Bespoke refers to a product that has been made to suit the needs, desires and wants of a particular customer: an item manufactured with the sole purpose of the particular client’s desire.

Though, for hundreds of years, there has been only product that had the bespoke label: one of the most famous, most displayed and most popular products ever. The Suit.

The Bespoke Suit: A Class Unto Itself

While it is true that bespoke jewelry, or perhaps even a bespoke apartment, are items that truly please the customer, bringing a sense of fulfillment rarely seen or felt, The Bespoke Suit’s customization is that of a different class altogether.

It’s made from scratch and is almost like a second skin. It’s a reflection of you, and is basically a garment that shows your best side and hides your flaws. And you’ll only get these advantages if the Suit itself was made by a professional, who ingrain your personality into the beautiful garment.

How long it last?

When a Bespoke Suit is made, no quick, lackluster techniques are used: those are generally reserved for off-the-rack garments. A Bespoke Suit is made to last, and should, with the proper care, last much longer than any off-the-rack suit. Buying one of these is generally a venture on the more expensive side, but it also means that the customer will almost never have to buy off-rack-again.

History

While no definite point of origin has been found, the history of bespoke suits can be traced back to Savile Row, a Street in England. For more than 100 years, people have been buying Bespoke Suits from the extremely prestigious shops located in ‘The Row’. Prominent figures like Sean Connery, Gregory Peck and others have make their purchases from the shops in Savile Row.

In Asia, it is a well known fact that the Bespoke Suits in India come from Bombay. The City of excitement, Bespoke Shirts were the first to be introduced here, as these were worn over traditional white dhotis by prominent members of Society. These shirts became quite popular over the course of time, as they became the new fashion trend for anyone with some money. A history of Bespoke Suits in Mumbai started from the early 1900s.
