The Dangers of Quitting a Drug Addiction Cold Turkey

by Fusion 360 Studios Digital Marketing Specialists

No matter what your vice may be, quitting your addiction cold turkey is not as safe or effective as it may seem. Studies show that most people who attempt to self-detox—or go cold turkey without rehab—underestimate the severity of their drug problem and tend to relapse.

Although different substances come with their own set of withdrawal side effects, experiencing these side effects without professional help can be physically and mentally harmful.

Side Effects

Depression, suicidal thoughts, nausea and vomiting are often universal side effects of quitting addiction cold turkey. The inevitable urge to use drugs again becomes prominent in this stage of withdrawal and many users will harm themselves in other unhealthy ways to distract themselves from their cravings.

Common side effects are generally emotional, physical or both. Emotional withdrawal is most commonly associated with drugs like cocaine, ecstasy and other extreme endorphin-releasing substances. Substances such as painkillers, heroin and even alcohol produce a much more physical withdrawal experience. Individuals that are addicted to these types of substances also commonly experience an increased heart rate, excessive sweating and difficulty breathing when going through withdrawal.

The Solution

The first step to successfully overcome drug addiction is accepting the fact that self-detoxing is not the solution and will almost certainly result in a relapse. The next step is to find a drug rehab center that best suits you.

As with most things, each step of the rehab process is easier said than done. Upon attending treatment, perhaps the most important thing is to stay open-minded and willingly accept all advice and medication given by the specialists.

Despite how alone you’ve felt in the past, you’re not alone on the road to recovery. Treatment centers take pride in providing well-rounded treatment and relapse prevention for patients from all types of drug and alcohol related backgrounds. It’s time to take control of your life before the addiction takes it from you.
