The story in the book is set in motion by the character Wolf, who kills the beloved leader of the staff, Monkey, in an attempt to steal the company's riches. Wolf takes it a step further by placing the blame for the murder on his fellow executives, illustrating the ruthless nature of office politics that Yip criticizes.

Yip’s tale does more than demonstrate the devious nature of many office executives. In Animal Spirits, Monkey gets revenge on his killer by haunting him from the grave and preventing Wolf from obtaining the wealth that the predator would go to any lengths to get. The eventual triumph of good over evil within the story is intended to provide hope to workers currently struggling under greedy, immoral executives.

While the story does contain murder and other forms of treachery, the novelist has made sure to incorporate humor and relatability throughout so that readers can laugh as they enjoy the cathartic read.

H.C. Yip had a successful career in the finance industry before he was laid off during the COVID-19 pandemic.
