The 9 America's Best Cities for Vegans

by Vegan Culinary Cruises Luxury – All Inclusive – All Vegan
The best cities for vegans are the ones that have the highest number of vegan restaurants and a culinary cruise specifically for vegans. It's also important to find a city where there's a high proportion of vegan-friendly businesses.

There are a lot of reasons why people choose to go vegan. For some, it's a personal health decision; for others, it's an ethical stance against animal cruelty. Whatever your reason for going vegan, if you're hoping to settle down in a city where there are plenty of options for plant-based dining and shopping, these following nine cities in the US are the best bets. There's more diversity, a wider range of restaurants and cultural events, and more vegan-friendly stores in these big cities than anywhere else in the country.

Liberty

Los Angeles, CA

Los Angeles has an incredible number of vegan restaurants. You can find everything from Indian to Middle Eastern, Thai to Japanese, and even some Mexican restaurants with a meatless menu.

There are also several different vegan food festivals in LA every year, including one called VegFest which takes place at the end of August each year. Additionally, there's a vegan night market event that happens twice a month (one on Saturday and one on Sunday), where you can get all kinds of street food options.

New York, NY

The home of the Statue of Liberty and Times Square, New York City is an obvious choice for any vegan to visit. It's also one of the most vegan-friendly cities in the United States, with hundreds of restaurants offering options from pizza to pad thai without meat or dairy products.

The city is also home to some notable vegans, comedians, and several events such as VegFest NYC and Vegan Mania are held at venues throughout Manhattan each year.

Chicago, IL

Chicago, Illinois is a great city for vegans. It has the largest number of vegan restaurants per capita in the United States, and it's home to one of the world's largest vegan food festivals. The Chicago Diner offers lots of tasty options and is open 24 hours a day, so you can get your fix whenever you need it. Other vegan restaurants in Chicago include Doomies, The Chicago Vegan Foods Diner and Meehan's Public House.

Chicago also hosts several annual events for vegans such as VegFestChicago—the world's largest vegan food festival—and Green City Market: A Farmers' Market & Cooking School at Lincoln Park Zoo (one of America's best). There are also many other smaller events throughout the year that celebrate plant-based living; check out one called Meatless Mondays or another called Meatout Mondays!

Portland, OR

Portland, OR has the most vegan restaurants per capita—and that’s not all. The city is also home to the world’s largest vegan mini-mall, where you can find an array of restaurants, food trucks and shops. There are a number of organizations in Portland that support and promote veganism, including VegPDX and Friends of Animals.
Portland is also home to Tofurky and Follow Your Heart vegan foods; they're two big names in the industry with products that include deli slices, sausages and more! Portland even hosts its own annual festival dedicated to plant-based diets: VegFest PDX.

San Francisco, CA

San Francisco is a great city for vegans and one of the best cities in America for vegans. While many restaurants have vegan options, there are also numerous fully vegan restaurants that serve up everything from doughnuts to burgers and fries. The Bay Area has an abundance of options for vegan foodies looking to enjoy some tasty eats.

The City by the Bay is also an ideal place to open a new vegan restaurant if you're interested in starting your own business. San Francisco was ranked as one of the top 10 cities where restaurants were most likely to succeed. With so many people living there who are passionate about sustainability and animal welfare issues, opening up shop with an all-vegan menu could be quite profitable!

Austin, TX

Austin, Texas is one of the country's most vegan-friendly cities. The city is home to several vegetarian restaurants. It also hosts multiple vegan festivals each year, including VegFest and VeganFest Texas.

Vegan food trucks such as the Vegan Nom are popular in Austin as well as a number of vegan delivery services. There are also plenty of grocery stores in Austin that offer plant-based alternatives to meat and dairy products.

Philadelphia, PA

Philadelphia is a vegan-friendly city, with many restaurants and grocery stores catering to the plant-based community. You'll find some of the best vegan dining options in Old City or Center City, while other areas will likely have more limited options.

Washington D.C.

Washington D.C. is the capital of the United States and home to the White House, Congress, Supreme Court and many other government buildings. The city was founded in 1790 and has grown into a bustling metropolis with over 700,000 residents.

Washington D.C. 's culinary scene is exploding with vegan options ranging from upscale restaurants to quick service spots. If you're visiting during the summer months when it's hot out but still want some plant-based goodness before heading off to see The National Mall or Smithsonian museums then head over to DC VegFest where there will be plenty of vendors selling cold treats made from coconut milk or soy ice cream cones dipped in chocolate shell topping!

Boston, MA

Boston is an impressive city for vegans, especially considering that it's also one of the best places to live in America. It has a thriving community of restaurants and cafes serving all kinds of vegan fare, plus it's home to some popular grocery stores that stock everything from tempeh bacon to almond milk ice cream.
