Textiles Don’t Lie Are There Really 8,000 Chemicals in Baby Clothes?

by Swati Ahuja Green Digo

For generations and generations, babies have been swaddled and dressed in conventional materials (cotton) and synthetic materials (Nylon, Rayon, Acrylic and Polyester) that have been grown with the use of pesticides and fertilisers.

What’s more, these fabrics have likely been bleached and dyed with a plethora of other harsh chemicals.

As many as 8,000, to be precise!!

But as awareness of chemical exposure, and its impact on children’s health, increases, parents are becoming more conscious about their consumption habits.

The rise of organic, eco-friendly and sustainable clothing is testament to this.

But you might we wondering, are there really 8,000 chemicals in baby clothes?

The answer is YES.

Here is a breakdown of the most commonly used chemicals in the textile manufacturing industry, and as a result, within baby apparel.

1.       Polyfluorinated Chemicals (PFCs): This group of man-made chemicals is well-regarded for its ability to repel water, dirt and oil from kids’ garments. The downside is that it can affect liver health, as well as, disrupt hormonal functions.

2.       Azo Dyes: This commercial dye is capable of producing bright shades of colour very quickly, and hence, used in about 60-70% of textiles. However, it can also release carcinogens like aromatic amines.

3.       Heavy Metals: This category of metals - lead, Mercury, Cadmium and Antimony - can be found within commercial dyes. Not only are the aforementioned metals carcinogenic, but they also pose high risk to the kidneys and nervous system.

4.       Formaldehyde: This toxic substance, while efficient in keeping clothing wrinkle-free and shrink-free, is highly carcinogenic. It can do major damage to the respiratory system.

5.       Flame Retardants: These chemicals are applied to garments to prevent the start or slow down the growth of a fire. That being said, they can also be major hormonal disruptors.

Did you know, most of the chemical finishes on conventional clothing fade away with multiple machine washes?

Hence, for all reasons and purposes, sustainable clothing is the safest, healthiest, most quality option for kids and adults.

It helps you preserve your child’s health, protect farmer’s and communities’ best interests, and safeguard the environment.

Switching to sustainable clothing is not only a health de-stressor, but a major financial de-stressor as well – it means being able to use garments for much longer.
