Test Rigs in Hydraulic Engineering and Aviation

by John Stev Hydraulic Cylinder Manufacturers
An important diagnostic and analytical system in engineering, the Hydraulic Test Rig is also known by two other names - Hydraulic Test Stand and Hydraulic Test Bench. It thoroughly tests a wide range of new or refurbished built components and subassemblies prior to their installation in any particular machinery or operational set-up. Prior to the advent of computers and automation based on assorted software, the tests were carried out as per certain prescribed ratings.

Thanks to the information technology, the Test Rigs these days are run in a regulated manner. Thus cylinders, valves, actuators, hydraulic pumps, motors and related components are tested to optimum perfection. The Test Stands are equipped with meticulously designed computerised pressure controls that are capable of testing multi cylinders simultaneously. They function as per SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) that is in tune with coded signals over communication channels to enable control of remote equipment. These systems have varied ratings in terms of maximum pressure and the flow of fluid in the pump. As for pumps, the tests centre round high pressure intensifier and variable frequency drive for precise RPM control.

By and large, the following checks are conducted on these Test Rigs:
  • Cyclic Test
  • Proof Pressure Testing
  • Internal Leakage
  • Static Friction Testing
  • Cushioning Test
  • Mid Stroke Testing

Reputed manufacturers of these systems and assemblies with certified Quality Assurance laboratory facilities undertake standard as well as special instrumentation tests. For suitable analysis and ratification, the facilities include –
  • Ultra Sonic Flaw Detector
  • Crack Detector
  • Digital Height Master
  • Salt Spray Chamber
  • Portable Data Recorder (Multiple Pressure Transducers)
  • Colour Camera for Tube ID inspection
  • Portable Coordinate Measuring Machine

Safety aspects happen to be among the prime features of well-known Test Stands. These are ergonomically placed emergency stop switch, preventive set-ups over pressure relief valve and the supply tank above it and also LED indicators to forewarn any possible distortions and discrepancies in the course of conducting a test.

Manufacturers of these Test Rigs are also capable of designing and developing an Aircraft Test Stand to test aviation related hydraulic, pneumatic and electro-mechanical systems and accessories. Apart from pumps, valves and actuators, it can be utilised to ascertain the status of components and systems such as-
  • Motors and transfer units
  • Landing gears and cockpit flight controls
  • Servo valves
  • Fuel and lubrication
  • Engine accessories and support equipment
  • Linear and rotary electro-mechanical actuators
  • Ball screw actuator
  • Brake and engine control components

The integration of airframe servo actuators, electrical power and fuel systems including high pressure supply can be ratified during the tests. These facilities are used for both flight-line and hangar utilities of civil and military aircraft including helicopters for the power packs. In the segment of military, test applications are conducted in the context of weapon control as well as guided missile launch. In addition to the above, airframe gearboxes, gear box power, vacuum and pneumatic airflow, thrust cradles and dynamometers and speed are also ratified.
