Take-Out : A Gold Mine For Restaurants!

by Nicolas F. Inbound Marketng Specialist

North Americans customers’ habits are changing. More of them leaves their kitchens everyday in favor of ready-to-go solutions. Adding up to this is that popular way of life that appeared several years ago called cocooning. Cocooning is the action of staying home and do everything from the comfort of your house. For that reason and many other, an increasing number of people prefer to order take-out then eating directly at the restaurant or cooking. In fact, 96% of people order food for take-out on a regular basis.

Some Statistics on Take-Out

North Americans spends a lot of money on take-out, according to a recent study on 1000 people. In fact, 82% of them orders at least once every two weeks and only 4% of them do not order take-out.

The ones who does order spends around 100$ a month in average on take-out orders. The main reasons that makes people order take-out are cravings (44%), laziness (37%) and the lack of time to cook (26%).

Incidentally, 4 people out of 10 says they do not have the time to cook a meal at home. This proportion is even higher with 18-24 years old, with 61%. In North America, the average timeframe needed to cook a meal is 92 minutes and people work around 40 to 50 hours a week. These numbers makes it easy to understand why people do not find the time to cook and why take-out is so popular.

Another reason is that people are worried about wasting food. 52% of survey respondents says they do not have the time to use up all the food they bought before it expires, with 17% saying they actually throw away unused food every week. These people prefer buying less food at the grocery store, even if it means ordering from a restaurant once or twice a week. .

The most popular meals to be ordered for take-out are pizza (81%), fries (27%) and cheeseburgers (27%).

Now more than ever, restaurateurs must adapt to their customers habits. Orders for take-out are also very profitable for restaurants as they often require less time and resources, considering there are no table service to do. That way, they can do a bigger volume with the same resources.
