Sweet Surprises, Old Friends, Coffee and Wine

by Divya S. Content Writer

This morning, I woke up with a jerk as I heard a loud noise of something fall, followed by my dog screaming and barking. It was supposed to be a lazy Sunday morning and I was disappointed when I looked at the watch; it was 6 o’clock in the morning and the sun shone bright already. I walked towards the living room, where the noise came from, and realized it was the newspaper. It fell right onto the spot where my dog was sleeping and he was still barking. As soon as I picked up the newspaper, a leaflet fell off. I picked it up it on the table along with the newspaper. Something in the newspaper caught my eye.  There was an advertisement about some French pastry shop near me and beside that was an ad for a Dog Crèche.

I had been going through the list of best dog crèche near me since a week now, but didn’t find a convenient one yet. This one seemed to be good enough, with great reviews online, and to add to it, it was on my way to work. I was supposed to meet a friend in one of the coffee shops in CP this evening and so I decided to give them a visit while I went. I saved the phone number and called them after breakfast, while I sipped on my cup of coffee. “Hello, May I help you?” said a familiar voice that I couldn’t figure out. I told them about Jiffy and they said that I should come over whenever I could. My brother named him Jiffy because he was always in a hurry and seemed busier than any human in the house. My eyes wandered over the commercial of the french pastry shop near me once again. Brioche Dorée in Connaught Place, said the commercial , was a huge coffee shop chain spread across countries and this one is the first and only one in India.

Since I was supposed to meet my friend in one of the coffee shops in CP, I thought, why not Brioche Dorée itself? After all, it was a 100% vegetarian café bakery and as far as I could remember at that point of time, the friend I was about to meet was vegetarian too. I called him up and let him know where we were meeting and he was delighted because he actually loved French food. After several considerations, I fixed the time at 7.30 in the evening.

I kissed Jiffy and left home a little early because I had to visit the crèche before reaching the French pastry shop near me. I headed to the crèche and rang the bell. It was a beautiful, spacious house and I could hear all the other dogs from outside the door itself. A boy opened the door and asked me to wait in the living room.

“You are the one that called this morning!”

I looked up. She was Amie, a childhood friend who had left school after her 7th and later on, the town too. I tried to trace her for a long time and I had almost forgotten about her. I hugged her and we talked for an hour. She had always been surrounded with pets since childhood and because of her love for dogs, especially, she opened this crèche some three years ago. And, here we were, after two long decades, in a place and time where we never thought we’d meet.

I told her I had to leave because I was going to see a friend in one of the coffee shops in CP. With the promise of seeing her often, because I was sure that Jiffy would love this place too, I kissed her goodbye and left.

The food at Brioche Dorée was a pleasure to the heart and the soul. I had a good time with my friend and even though he had insisted on checking out other places earlier, I’m glad about the commercial on this French pastry shop near me in the newspaper. After eating, we walked around, hung out a little, moved in to a bar, drank, and danced. We said our goodbyes and here I am, in my bed, thinking of how eventful the day was.

It started with a shock, moved on to a sweet surprise and ended in quite a fun time. I seek to know every detail about Amie’s life and let her know all of mine. This is the kind of friends we’d been at school - we were inseparable. The place I live in, with all its glory and all its stupidity, doesn’t seem dull to me anymore.
