Superstitions & Lucky Charms Related to Lotteries

by Mona Singh Writer
A lottery is no doubt a game of chance with equal probability of all the numbers appearing in the draw. But still, people swear by various strategies. The logical people try to find out the list of probable numbers based on previous draws. They also work upon bettering their winning odds by buying more tickets. For this, they form lottery syndicates.  Those who are more creative opt for strategies that revolve around superstitions and lucky charms. The logical lot can call it superstition, but for them, it is the perfect recipe to win.

It’s not that superstitions and lucky charms are only restricted to creative people. Even those who are logical in their approach don’t mind following it if they believe it can brighten their winning prospects.

Those who believe in this are found playing both online and offline. The online platforms have provided people with the convenience of playing all major lottery games sitting in the comforts of their homes. Lottoland is one such platform, which offers more than 30 major international lotteries to its users and is expanding to newer geographies. It is launching a website in India to tap the vast potential of Indian markets.

Coming to superstitions and lucky charms, let’s see what lottery players usually follow.

Those who believe in mixing their lottery strategies with superstitions follow their routine religiously and would not change it for anything. It can be as simple as crossing their fingers, which is, by the way, a very common superstition in the world of lotteries or choosing a specific number like the lucky 7.

Those in China believe that if you are on a winning streak, you should refrain from washing your hands. This superstition arises from a Chinese belief that water is money and washing your hands means that you are washing away the money that is struck between your fingers.

The Chinese follow yet another belief, which is never to play all odd numbers in one play. They believe in the concept of Yin and Yang. For them, even numbers are Yin and belong to humans, while odd numbers are Yang and belong to the gods. According to them, playing with only odds will anger the Gods and they won’t let you win.

There are various charms, amulets and talismans, which people believe have magical powers and thus wear them or carry them around while buying the ticket or on the draw day. Touching something that one considers lucky for them is again practised by many. Many people wear a particular piece of clothing or a particular colour while playing or when the draw happens.

There are instances wherein something simple as a person or a car can turn out to be a lucky charm as it did for Johnny and Becky Taylor. They bought a GMC van, which was earlier owned by a Florida Lotto winner. After buying, they played a lottery and won INR 55.67 crores.

Some superstitions might sound strange, but lottery players do believe in them.
