Gambling Superstitions in the World

by Terry John Teacher

A lot of people have some minor superstitions like knocking three times on wood but don’t take it seriously. However, gambling is commonly associated with superstition and a lot of countries and cultures have their own set of beliefs when it comes to football bet tips and predictions or gambling. So, let’s mention some of the craziest gambling superstitions worldwide.

The Winning Colour

This superstition comes from Asia and it implies that a lucky colour is red. In China, red is associated with prosperity and good fortunes. A lot of Asian players will often wear red suits, pieces of clothes, or anything red believing that it increases their chances of winning. Some casinos in Macau, China, have “red rooms” that are thought to bring good luck. They do, but mainly to the house.

The Numbers Game

Famous numbers are unlucky 13 and lucky number 7. Number 13 has always been considered unlucky and a bad omen, and especially in Western culture. After all, there were 13 people at the Last Supper. Some hotels skip the 13th floor by naming it the 14th and even room 12 to 14 because a lot of players avoid them so they have removed them. However, in Asia, number 13 is a symbol of good luck.

Number 7 is considered a lucky number throughout the world as it is a symbol of prosperity and good luck. However, it is a bad number in Australia. Aussies will get seriously offended if you even say the number 7 out loud during a game of craps.

For Japanese, number 4 is the same as number 13 for the Western civilizations. The superstition is tied with their language because, in Japanese, the number 4 sounds very similar to the word “death” which is why people stay away from it and even some hospital omit the number.

Pregnant Women

A good luck charm in the Philippines is rubbing the belly of a pregnant woman. So, if a pregnant woman is present at a casino, superstitious people believe that she drives the bad energy away. This is why it is common to see a pregnant woman in a casino in the Philippines.

Itchy Right Hand Problem

This one comes from Slavic people. In Serbia, if your right hand is itching, it means that you’ll be giving money soon. So, if you feel your right-hand itching in a casino, just walk away. On the other hand, if your left hand is itching, Serbians believe that they’ll be receiving some money.

These are just some of the superstitions from the world and there are many more. Share your cultural or personal superstition with us in the comments section.
