Structural Design Course: What you should know about the course?

by Varun Mishra Web Designer

Structural design is a specialized branch of civil engineering that deals with ensuring the stability, rigidity, and strength of structures. The primary task of any structural engineer is to make sure that different load bearing structures are able to support each other by sharing load or stress. In order to design a proper structure, the structural engineer has to carry out a series of tasks including calculating pressure, stress, and strain on each component; selecting the appropriate material for construction, producing the drawing or computer model of the structure. Successfully carrying out these tasks requires a great deal of expertise and this expertise is provided by a structural design course.

The specialized structural design course has been created specifically for either civil or production engineers. Some foundational degrees are required as this course is not an elementary introduction to structural design but an in-depth analysis of this field. This course is specifically meant for professionals like architects, civil engineers, project managers, and so on.

The structural design course starts by providing an overview of this field. Gradually, the topic becomes more specialized and includes topics, such as ductile detailing, plate girder, soil mechanics, load analysis and loading calculation. Each student is also taught the structural design of the following elements: RCC beams, overhead tank, staircase, steel beam and column, connection, base plate, footing raft, portal frames and bracing, and so on. Furthermore, students are also intimated with the topics of post-structural engineering.

Any structural engineering course is incomplete if it does not contain structural engineering software. In structural design course, all important software are included like Staad Pro, E-tab, Tekla, and Safe.

Along with providing a deep understanding of the mentioned topics, the structural design course also offers practical experience. The students are explained the structural engineering aspect of various forms of buildings, such as shopping malls, residential buildings, hotel buildings, and industrial complex. Most importantly, in this course, students are taught to learn in a job-oriented manner.

After finishing this course, the individual becomes eligible and competent to work on various projects, such as commercial buildings, shopping malls, office complex, refinery, industrial plants, and much more.
