Story Behind Candles And What It Is Made Up Of
by Celtic Candles Celtic CandlesIt is hard to determine the exact
date when the first-ever candle lit up. However, history tells us that candles
originated from ancient Egypt. They dipped the core of reeds in melted animal
fat. Thereafter, they lit up the reeds with fire. This created torches or rush
lights, though they did not come with any wicks.
Most modern candles feature
paraffin wax. Paraffin comes from petroleum and is easily mass-produced. Also,
it allows manufacturers to add different colors and scents before the mold
dries up. Some manufacturers also combine paraffin with vegetable wax. This is
common among high-quality luxury candles. Some candle makers using beeswax.
However, it will be tough to find a candle made of animal fat. Additionally,
the beeswax is very expensive nowadays.
Furthermore, some companies use
natural wax. Some of the more popular types of natural waxes include palm oil
wax and soy wax. Generally, manufacturers blend these two. The good thing about
natural wax is that it offers a longer burning time with little to no odor. The
downside is that candles using natural wax are more expensive than their
paraffin-based counterparts.
Many couples have a Unity Candle
at their wedding. Two outside candles are lit by the couple's mothers to
represent their lives to this moment. These distinct flames of the wedding candles, each burning alone,
represent the faith, wisdom, and love received from their parents. Together,
the couple lights a center candle, symbolizing the union of their lives. Their
thoughts shall be for each other, and they will share both joys and sorrows.
The flames of the two smaller candles remain lit to show how although they are
now one, they are still each unique individuals. When a candle burns, the
melting wax on the candle in a way disfigures the candle, representing the risk
and element of pain that exists in a love relationship. A candle, in order to
fulfill itself, must burn itself out. If a candle is never lit, it never
fulfills its purpose.
Most scented candles contain a combination of natural and synthetic
fragrances. These fragrance materials may be derived from essential oils or
from synthetic aroma chemicals. A well-made candle will contain only fragrance
materials approved for candle use; the addition of fragrance to a candle
formulation should be carefully monitored to ensure that the candle will burn
cleanly and properly.
The aroma from a lighted scented
candle is released through the evaporation of the fragrance from the hot wax
pool and from the solid candle itself. Like unscented candles,
properly-formulated scented candles will primarily produce water vapor and
carbon dioxide when burned. The only difference is that a fragrance is also released
with a scented candle.
