Sprinkler Systems: How They Help in Suppressing Fire

by Heather Hall Heather Hall has led the Coordinating team at LFRA

Sprinklers are triggered when the temperature in a room reaches 60-70 degrees. When activated the sprinkler will spray water across the room to suppress the Fire. Sprinklers will active independently they do not go off all at the same time.

Fire compartmentation needs to be in place to stop the spread of Fire. If Sprinklers are fitted it provides Architects and Designers with more scope with regards to the internal layout of a building such as larger compartmental size, increase travel distance, and stair configuration.

An Automatic Fire Suppression System will benefit most buildings however here are a few premises that would benefit most

Some property owners are required by law to install an Automatic Fire Suppression System

  • New Residential Blocks of Flats over 11m high

  • Uncompartmented areas of shops or self-storage premises with an open plan area of over 200m2.

If you are identified as the ‘Responsible Person’ and manage the property it is important you install the right Automatic Suppression System. There are specific systems available for vulnerable and the elderly that may be suitable for your premise. You will also need to consider what Automatic Fire Detection is most suitable, Fire Doors, Emergency Escape Signage and a Fire Risk Assessment for the building are important considerations too.

The Fire Risk Assessment will help you determine the above as it will identify the deficiencies within the building. All the above mentioned premises must have a current Fire Risk Assessment – it is the law.

If you are the identified ‘Responsible Person’ for your London or Manchester premise, then you must check that your Fire Safety Risk Assessment is current. If you require a review or a new Fire Safety Risk Assessment, then you must appoint a competent person who is fully aware of the changes to The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 amended 2022.
