A large number of small dogs develop gum and teeth problems that ultimately lead to loss of teeth. Even though tooth loss is highly painful and irritating for these small dogs, other oral problems can further lead to severe illnesses like heart disease and other immune system complications.

So it is advisable that a bi weekly brushing of the teeth is done in order to avoid such a common small dog health issue. The crunchy chews and treats having good quality ingredients can help your small dog show sparkling white teeth.

There are some small dogs breeds as well that suffer from breathing problems due to the reason that they have tiny and flat face with small noses. This causes them to breathe and sneeze more loudly. This then results in some kind of distress that also limits the life span of the small dogs. There are yet another set of small dog breeds that have issues like allergies because of the fact that when they walk on the grass, their noses touch the ground and they breathe in whatever is lying on the flora and fauna.

Also, it is a known fact that dogs just love sweets and chocolates. While all dog breeds are easily allergic to sweets, larger dogs are not much affected by consuming small quantity. But on the other hand, even a small amount of chocolate can prove to be harmful for the tiny pooch.

Even though it is seen that the small dogs are long lived when compared to the larger ones the former category of dogs are more prone to illnesses and diseases. Many illnesses such as bacterial infections and viruses can affect the whole system of a small dog at a faster rate thus causing their rapid downfall.

The small dogs are even more prone to low blood sugar i.e. hypoglycemia due to their fast metabolism rate. It is therefore imperative to pay attention to the early signs and symptoms of any disease and take immediate steps to keep the small dog medical problems at bay.

Small dogs eat just like the larger ones but they are more prone to gain weight at a much faster rate. This is also because that some small dog breeds do not indulge in much activity and then suffer from problems like hypoglycemia and obesity. Canine distemper is also a common disease that is suffered by the small canines and is highly fatal, incurable and contagious illness. Featured by gastrointestinal and respiratory symptoms, the small dogs are more susceptible to this kind of a disease. The young dogs that are 3 to 6 months old and are not vaccinated are more prone to this disease. It is actually a viral illness that severely affects multiple body system of the dog.

Last but not least, other common problems found in small dogs are collapsed trachea and luxating patella. These are some of the serious diseases that need to be prevented and treated as soon as possible. So it is always the best option to research about your dog breed and know what possible diseases can be suffered by it. Small dogs are not at all immune from medical problems and when they face any of the diseases, they become highly uncomfortable and miserable.
