Uthiram falls in March/April when a full moon goes through the star
Uttara-phalguni. This transition of the moon through this star is considered
auspicious in Hinduism. The day is so auspicious as it is considered the
marriage day of Parvati and Shiva, Devasena and Murugan, Andal and Ranganath
and Sita and Rama; it is believed that Gods celebrate this day as their wedding
day.
Since the day
signifies the marriage anniversary of the Gods, it denotes the domestic life or
a marital life of a person. The day makes us understand the value of performing
one’s duty while living in a household. The day signifies relationships and
society and how a family is important.
Panguni Uthiram
indicates the importance of marriage and how marriage is a sacred bond by which
we evolve to the next generation. On the day, Goddess Laxmi is also said to
have incarnated on Earth from the churning of the ocean. Celebrations happen in
several places of India, such as Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and
Kerala. The occasion is significant in the Southern regions of India than in
others.

where the rituals of divine marriages are conducted: Murugan Temple of Palani,
Aiyyappa temple of Sabarimala in Kerala, Kapaleshwar temple of Chennai,
Mangaleshwara temple in Trichy, Sri Ranganatha temple in Srirangam, Uthiran
star temple Mangalambigai Sametha Mangalyeswarar Koil at Edaiyathumangalam.
That is not it; a
festival of ten days is conducted in the temples of Thiruparangundram, Mylapore
in Chennai, and Palani temples. This is how much significance is given to
Panguni Uthiram.
As the day is related
to marital life, it also provides us the opportunity to correct the troubles of
our relationship. On the day, seeking the help of the divine or praying to it
helps to strengthen our bonds and get us rid of tensions. Whether a married or
unmarried couple, both can get benefitted by saying their worries to the
divine.
On the day, the
depiction of the marriage ceremony of the divine beings happens. Attending this
depiction impacts our consciousness positively that we understand the value of
marriage. One reaches a higher consciousness makes better decisions in their
relationship that leads to a harmonious life ahead. God influences your mind
with positivity and intelligence that you take actions in favor of your
relationship.
Celebration at the
Murugan Temples
Murugan is a deity
worshipped in the Southern states of India. To please God on the day, devotees
pierce their bodies with needles and spikes to show their devotion toward
Murugan. Some devotees also carry bamboo poles called kavadi. They carry these
poles with holy water, or milk, and some flowers; they pray to God as a ritual
and get their prayers answered.
This way, thousands
of devotees head to Lord Murugan’s temples to celebrate the day, which happens
in the twelfth month of the Tamil calendar. The day is also celebrated as the
Jayanti or birthday of Lord Ayyappan.
Every year people
mark the day by visiting some religious sites with their relatives or family.
This year, however, due to Corona, people can celebrate the day with devotion
while being in their homes and watching the Artis of Panguni Uthiram via the

Observing the Fast
on Panguni Uthiram
Some people also
give significance to observing fast on the day. Hindus also name it the day of
Kalyana, and hence the Vrat is known as Kalyana Vrat. In North India, the day
is celebrated majorly in Braj, Vrindavan, Mathura, Barsana, and Kumaoni; there,
the occasion is celebrated as Holi. The festival of colors and harmony brings
everyone together.
By observing the
Vrat, it is believed that the observer gets bestowed with good health, wealth,
and happiness. After completing the life, he attains the heavenly abode of
Shiva, the Kailash Dham.
Married couples who
are childless when observing this vrat get blessed by a child. Unmarried
couples get their choice of a life partner.
In East India or
Bengal, the day is celebrated as Basatotsav or Dol Poornima. In Bihar, the day
recalls the wedding of Parmeshwara and Parvati. In Andhra Pradesh, it is known
as Basant Panchmi.
This is how in
different parts of India, the occasion is known with different names; however,
the festive mood and devotion to God always remain the same.
