Siding: repair and maintenance of the material

by Ivan Q. programmer

Siding is a popular building material used to decorate the facades of buildings. It is attractive to developers for its reasonable cost, ease of installation and presentable appearance. But, the panels do not have high strength, so over time, repairs to the siding may be required. All work can be done by hand, which will be discussed below. We will also find out how to care for the finish so that it lasts longer.

How to replace the panel.

If the siding is damaged, then not only the appearance of the house deteriorates, but it also loses its protective properties. Do-it-yourself vinyl siding repair is a fairly simple task that you can handle on your own, knowing a few tricks. First, you need to know the installation technology of this type of finish. Secondly, a special tool is useful for the work, with which the material is removed - siding zip.

First of all, before you start removing or replacing the finish, you need to check the color of the product. The fact is that vinyl sidings under the influence of sunlight begin to fade. This question is purely aesthetic, but it is much better for the materials to be of the same shade.

The replacement procedure is as follows:

 1. Evaluate the damaged area and determine the panels to be replaced.

 2. Next, measure the length of the new siding, with an allowance of 5 cm for overlap. Using a zip tool, gently loosen the bottom edge of the damaged panel. It is better to loosen the material along the entire length, which will facilitate the procedure.

3. Cut out the damaged element with a knife or scissors.

4. Again we take the tool and pry off the panel under which the damaged area is located. Having reached the fastening - nails, we remove them and dismantle the siding itself.

5. We install a new, replaceable panel in the prepared hole and fix it with nails.

6. We use a zip tool to fasten the top of the siding.

Undoubtedly, this finishing material is relatively strong and durable. But even the best panels sometimes require repair. For example, siding can be accidentally damaged or it happens that it “melted” in the sun. Consider the main cases and ways to solve them.

We repair the corner profile.

In corner panels for siding, it is the front part that is often damaged. To make repairs, you do not have to disassemble the entire skin. The sequence of work is as follows:

1. The face strip of the damaged panel must be cut in such a way as to preserve the nail part and the bottom of the receiving gutter.

2. Take a new siding panel and cut off the nail strip from it.

 3. The new part is attached to the bar with rivets (made of vinyl or nylon). Allocate H- and J-profiles, which are repaired similarly.

As you can see, it is enough to make a small replacement, which is easy to do alone.

Restoring the swollen area.

Often, houses begin to sheathe the trim even before the end of the shrinkage of the walls and foundation. Final shrinkage is a time consuming process that most construction companies do not have. Therefore, the workers finish the job and take on a new one, and the panels installed at this stage simply deform faster. More specifically, individual siding sheets begin to swell. Often this is observed at the junction of a brick wall with a wooden attic. The fact is that these 2 materials shrink differently, so the finish can squint. To repair the siding on a house with swollen sheets, you need.

1. Remove the panel from the lock with a mounting hook.

2. Straighten the deformed area.

3. Insert a steel starting strip into the gap formed in the wall. In order for it to lie correctly, the distance between the lock of the lower part and the hook of the removed panel is marked right on it.

 4. In a word, a spacer is installed between the locking mechanism, which will prevent further deformation of the panel.

Set the aligned sheet back.
