There are multiple routes that you can take to reach the destination, and each offers a different experience. So if you’re looking for a unique trek that will offer spectacular views and a chance to explore some of Ladakh’s lesser-known areas, Sham Valley Trek is definitely worth considering.

What is Sham Valley Trek?

Sham Valley Trek is  the most popular hikes in Ladakh. The valley is a stunningly beautiful spot, with winding paths and lush green forests. The trekking trail leads you through the valley, past lakes and rivers, before ending at the snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas.

The route offers plenty of opportunities to see wildlife, including wild boars, deer, and alpine ibex. There are also several caves to explore, including Panchsheel Cave (pictured above) which boasts an impressive 8km length.

The trek can be done as a short loop or as a full day hike; either way it's a great way to get close to nature and enjoy some breathtaking views. Most of the treks in ladakh like the eternally gorgeous Markha Valley Trek is of the same nature. However Markha valley is difficult than Sham valley trek.

How to get to the Sham Valley Trek location?

To get to the Sham Valley Trek location, visitors can take a bus from Leh or Kargil. The journey takes around six hours and costs Rs. 350. Alternatively, they can drive there. The road is in good condition but it can be treacherous in winter. A permit is required to visit the valley and can be obtained from the police station in Leh or Kargil.

What to expect on the trek?

The Sham Valley Trek is indeed the best treks in Ladakah and an incredible journey through the stunning Karakoram range. The trail begins in the town of Kashgar, located in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of China, and ends in the town of Manali in Himachal Pradesh, India. The trek takes about 3 days to complete and offers magnificent views of the Himalayas along the way.

The trail is poorly marked at first, but after a day or so it becomes much clearer. There are a few streams to ford along the way, but otherwise there are no real obstacles to overcome. Except for a few villages and checkpoints manned by security personnel, you'll be mostly alone on this trip.

The weather can be quite unpredictable during the summer months; sometimes it's hot and sunny, while other times it can rain all day long. However, even if it does rain heavily, your waterproof gear will keep you warm and dry. Bring plenty of food with you – especially if you're planning on doing any hiking or climbing throughout your trip – as restaurants are few and far between in these remote areas. And finally, make sure to have enough cash on hand as most places don't accept credit cards.

The best time of year to go on Sham Valley Trek?

There's no denying it – the best time of year to go on the trek is autumn. The leaves are changing colors, the air is crisp and clear, and the views from the tops of the mountains are stunning. Autumn also has shorter days which means that there's less daylight hours to get exhausted.

If you're thinking about taking a trek in Sham Valley, here are some tips for making your experience as enjoyable as possible:

1) Start planning your trip as early as possible. The earlier you book your trip, the better chance you'll have of securing a good spot on the trail.

 2) Make sure to pack enough clothes. A lot can change in just a few weeks during fall – from hot weather to chilly temperatures. Bring layers so that you can adjust as needed.

3) Bring bug spray! There are plenty of bugs in Sham Valley during fall, and they can be quite pesky if not repelled properly.

4) Arrive prepared to hike! Most trails in Sham Valley are fairly challenging, and it pays to be well-prepared before leaving home. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes, bring snacks and drinks, and bring a filled water bottle with you on your hike so that you don't have to stop every few minutes for a bathroom break.
