Selecting The Correct Upholstery Foam

by Amelia White Business Analyst

In modern times, many professionals in the business of upholstery prefer using polyurethane foam for padding in different types of furniture such as couches, chairs, mattresses, etc. Whether you are doing a DIY project or getting a bespoke item prepared by some furniture company, selecting the right kind of foam for upholstery may seem quite challenging a task because there are several technical expressions used for describing the quality and different grades. The most effective way by which you can choose the right one is you can work with a reputable firm that will provide the right type of upholstery foam in Sydney.

Here are some tips that you can follow to determine which foam type will suit your requirements the best:

Consider The Firmness

Check the firmness or compression measurement of the foam, which is actually the amount of pressure required for compressing it by around 25 per cent. The level of firmness is an appropriate indicator of quality and purpose. The Polyurethane Foam Association states that this test is known as the indentation force deflection (IFD) or indentation load deflection (ILD). Medium to additional firm is ideal for use in seat cushions. Soft options are good for arms and back cushions.

Check The Density Rating

Determine the quality of the foam by checking its density rating, that is, the weight exerted by a single cubic foot of it. With the rise of the rating, the quality as well as expense increases. The most ideal levels of density for upholstery are generally in the middle of 1.8 and 3.2. Higher quality performs better under repeated or continuous pressure, as with seat cushions.

Ask About The Cells Type

Ask the manufacturer whether cells of the foam, you are considering for purchase, are ‘open’ or ‘closed’. Open cell types are ideal when pieces need to be glued together. However, the ones with closed cells are capable of floating and therefore, more suitable for use in marine upholstery.

Go For A High Resilient Option

Seek for an option that is tagged as high resilient (HR), for this type is more durable than the others and also suitable for furniture pieces that are frequently used. Also make sure that you choose something that is resistant to fire.

Select An Appropriate Thickness

Choose the thickness by considering the item that is going to be upholstered. For chair and sofa cushions, it must not be more than 4 to 6 inches. Cushions in dining chairs, however, should be less than 3 inches thick.
