Seattle Winters Mean it’s Time to Sweep the Chimney

by Arlene Garcia Marketing Manager
After spending a lot of the winter relaxing by the fireplace and enjoying the warm glow, my husband suggested that we find a chimney sweep to clean everything up for us. Not wanting to shell out any extra money, I brushed him off until he pulled up some information on the Internet about chimneys. The article that he read was about this substance called creosote, which is a residue that is produced by burning wood. Unfortunately, this residue tends to stick to the inside of chimneys, and it is even flammable. That means that the inside of your chimney can catch on fire, and this can completely destroy the structure of your home.

Since we live in Seattle, and it is cold and rainy for a good portion of the year, we tend to have a lot of fires. I really like the warmth it provides, and my husband loves the ambiance it creates. Of course the kids get a kick out of it too, since they feel like they’re on a big camping trip.

However, all this had to come to an end once I heard about the creosote buildup. It had been years since we had hired someone to clean our chimney, and I didn’t feel safe risking our home to a fire. Not to mention, one of the kids has their bedroom upstairs near the chimney, so it made me feel really uneasy to know that there was a thin wall separating them from a hazardous residue.

Calling the Chimney Sweep

We really didn’t know how to find a Chimney Sweep in Seattle, so the first thing we did was to ask some of our friends. Unfortunately, a lot of them simply used their heater; however, our one friend who lights fires all the time couldn’t remember the name of their chimney sweep. We basically had to start at ground zero, and after some frustration, I thought it would be helpful to include all the things we did to find a great chimney sweep in Seattle. We knew we wanted them to have the following qualities, and when we found the right one it was definitely worth it.

•    A chimney sweep with a professional appearance and pleasant attitude
•    Someone who is experienced in the profession
•    A person who would be safe to have in our home and around our children
•    Someone who could get the job done cleanly and cost effectively Some Frustration

We started looking around on the Internet, and we found a lot of advertisements for chimney sweep services. The problem was that we didn’t know which one of these individuals we could trust, let alone who was the best and most experienced. We started to resent doing searches, but thankfully we found some great advice on a local Seattle forum.

Finding the Right Chimney Sweep

We saw some advice that suggested we contact the local Chimney Sweep Guild and ask them for recommendations about who would be the best professional for our home. The next day we contacted the friendly people at the chimney sweep guild, and they got back to use shortly thereafter. They suggested some providers in our area, and the person with whom we communicated even gave us their personal suggestion on who would work best for us.

After we received such great advice, we contacted the recommended chimney sweep and set up an appointment for the very next week. Once they arrived, they cleaned everything thoroughly and professionally. Additionally, there wasn’t even a speck of soot or ash that was left in the house. Needless to say, we’re enjoying some nice fires again.
