How To Deal Properly A Request For A Raise In Pay

1. Listen to your employee- It is best to listen first to your employee's request and see how serious he is.  Let him finish his talking and never cut his conversation.

2. Once his done, try to make him feel at ease.  Let him feel that you understand his point and that you appreciate his hard work and contribution to the company.

3. Ask him, if, he has more things to say.  If yes, let him continue.  When he's done, assure him that you get all his arguments and that you will come back to him soon.

4. Tell him that it’s not for you to decide. And that, you will need to talk to the HR and the people concerned.

5. You may also tell him to keep this meeting as confidential.

What Would Be The Company’s Basis For A Decision?

1. It's a policy on giving increase and bonuses- many companies are implementing such policy to follow.  It is to make sure that, they are following a program and remain organized.

2. The yearly budget- Companies are given a yearly budget.  Every end of the year, a supplemental budget for next year will be submitted.  Everything is included there, which include salaries, bonuses, and an increase in pay.  It's the prerogative of the finance department if they still can allocate a fund for such an increase.  If, not, you will have to wait for the next budget.

3. The employee's performance- This will include his working attitude, his relationship with his co-workers, his contribution to the company, and many more.  A good employee will always be given priority in a different situation.

4. The employee’s length of stay in the company- This counts the years, he has worked in the company.  It includes loyalty and dedication. If, he has worked in the company in a short time, then, he may not qualify yet for a raise.
